Do I need to buy the X-Wing MIniature Game or I can play it just with this Expansion Pack ?

If you want to play the game, you do need the X-Wing Miniature Core Set, which features two TIE Fighters and one X-Wing.  The core set comes with all of the movement templates, dice, and cards, as well as enemy ships to fight with.  The expansion packs only deliver that particular model and its respective cards and equipment.

Can someone explain how this game "works" and what I exactly need to get started? I'm buying for my 13 yr old son.

Well you start off with each player building their forces with 100 point buy in. Each ship has a point value and each pilot card and power up card also has a point value (you get 1 X wing and 2 tie fighters in the core set, this is enough to start a game but you will quickly want to buy more ships for variety.)  Then you start placing your ships on a game map or predefined game space. Before each round you pick a move for each one of your ships then in pilot skill order you move them on the board. Once you are done you see if your ship can fire on another ship and if you can you roll attack dice and the defender rolls defense dice. Then you rinse and repeat. The game is very fun and I've bought just about every expansion they have made. The base is 3 inches. The ship is about 5 inches long and 3 3/4 inches wide.. The stand is around 2 1/2 inch,,, Roughly..
