Last Night: The romantic, heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny romcom from the bestselling author

This was a grief+comedy filled contemporary romance, and it was just the BEST.
This was a grief+comedy filled contemporary romance, and it was just the BEST.This book made me cry in the prologue itself. This book made me ugly cry throughout, but it also made me laugh out loud. This book is beautiful in terms of plots and characters.. but what is most beautiful about this book is the author's writing."This is what I never knew about loss—it’s also about what you gain. You carry a weight that you never had before. It’s never behind you. It’s alongside you.""I miss you. I hate inventing you, scripting your lines, instead of having the original.""... it was just another world, exactly like this one, but with a dramatic difference. Your presence. Your presence, which I took for granted.""You are never behind me. You are never something that happened. You are always alongside me."If you like contemporary romances, and if you're okay with the TW (death of a close person, dealing with grief after the death, and a fairly gruesome car accident which is described in detail once in the book), you HAVE to read this book. It is worth every one of its 400 odd pages 💛💛

Mhairi McFarlane's writing style is top notch.
I've read two books of this author including this one and I loved her writing style so much. I can always relate to her female characters.I just finished reading Last Night and I adore this book so much. I feel like I'll never get bored if I get to sit and have a conversation with Fun and Eve.💕

Good one, definitely worth a read
I loved it actually. There's a lot going for this book. The writing style, the deep emotions, the characters, the whole layout and the story itself. It's about "recovery"...but that creeps up so silently and steadily that you never notice and you are healed.

I love this author. Please check out her works.
I love everything that this author writes. She has an interesting and uncommon perspective on things and when that is applied to rom-coms, the result is books that are different from the usual stuff and intelligent reading. I can't recommend her enough- she is an intelligent, thinking-person's author.

Exceeded all expectations
My heart is broken into million pieces after reading this. Not sure if I'll be able to do justice to the story by writing this review, but here it goes.Justin, Ed, Eve & Susie have been friends since they were teenagers. And now in their thirties, they are even closer than ever with Eve being in love with Ed, who's engaged to someone else. But after just one night- a tragic incident- everything changes. The whole dynamics of every relationship is changed in an instant.Narrated from Eve's POV, the grief, lies, sadness, heartbreak, deception & secrets are all revealed slowly in gut wrenching scenarios.Eve, not only she's dealing with the loss of her best friend, but also finds out that she had kept a huge secret from her. All this time she had been stuck in a manipulative lie, was someone's back-up plan and misunderstood a person by just hearing one side of the story. The characters all around her were a deception except for Justin & Fin, whom I loved with my dear heart. The moment we are introduced to Finlay, I knew, I just knew that he was something else entirely. The subtle love triangle that was shown reminded me of 'Dear Emmie Blue' ( which is my absolute favorite book ever).I was an emotional wreck after reading that & I'm an emotional wreck after reading this. This book deals with so many emotions & issues such as abandonment, abuse, cheating, death of a loved one and has got all the FEELS.But at the end, it was all about navigating through life after a loss, hearing both sides of a story.BUT most IMPORTANTLY, having a happily-ever-after not with your first love but with the guy who you had shared an awkward first kiss with. And who was always there for you, 15 years before & 15 years after.I was almost sure to give it a 4 stars but the last chapter broke me beyond recovery & made me a sobbing mess. A beautiful story about finding love amidst loss, chaos & grief.

I LOVE MHAIRI MCFARLANE SO MUCH. Everything she writes is brilliant and this book is, in my opinion, her best yet. Please read it. We could all use a smile on our face, some super charged romance with a dash of understanding how to grieve the loss of a best friend.I wish I could forget that I'd read it and be able to read it afresh. It's THAT GOOD.

First few chapters were a bit slow. But, once it took off it was touching and funny. Another good one Mhairi!

Muchos sentimientos encontrados

Mhairi McFarlane's best book (so far)
I love how much depth and insight are in Mhairi McFarlane's books. They may fit the 'romcom' label in some ways, and few do witty dialogue/banter better, but the stories and relationships are never lightweight. Particularly so here. That said, though Just Last Night deals with one major character's sudden death, it's not maudlin. The descriptions of grief and loss are vivid and heartbreaking but there is so much humor and warmth too. If you've read any of Mhairi's other books you'll probably spot where the romance storyline is going pretty early on, yet here, too, the relationships feel so very real and convincing that it's still completely satisfying. There are no white knights or villains - even a character like Hester, who could have been played just for laughs, comes across as human. Eve's happy ending is not that she gets the (right) guy (though she does), but that she sees herself and others clearly and learns to value herself. She might be my favorite Mhairi heroine so far. Reading the other reviews here about the first third being slow - maybe, though it wasn't a negative for me; it felt like there was more emotional set-up than usual and the characters consequently felt more fully rounded.

Emotional story about love and friendship
I really enjoyed reading this book. Whole it was very sad for long parts of it, I loved the happy ending Eve got in the end despite everything she went through!

A bit different but somehow truly heartfelt !
I was totally in love with all of Mhairi’s previous books and it’s been months since I was expecting this one... and yet it has proven to be totally unexpected! I was looking for an easy romantic comedy but I couldn’t find it on the first pages, although the author’s style was definitely there. Her plot is so original but at the same time so in tune with the previous books that made this one so uniquely hers. I would recommend to anyone who loves a big dose of inner insight to read this book, for it’s not a story of chivalry, of a knight in shining armor or anything like that. It feels real for me, it shows we sometimes don’t really know even the ones who we call best friends, and we own our own part of guilty for trusting our Hearts blindly. It’s never late though to claim the wheel that steers your life back. I love Mhairi’s books because they bring this sense of familiarity with the characters, we empathize with them, they could be me, or my best friend, or my brother or sister.
