The head appeared to be cast instead of forged. It has held up to throwing very well, however. It is tough steel and sticks well. I love the design, and it has become my favorite throwing ax. My only complaint is the handle. It was not finished well where the head mounts. The wood is rough, and the head goes almost to the very end of the handle. I will probably have to replace the handle as it wears from the impact of throwin, but for now it works great.
