Raya and the Last Dragon

I bought this book to read to my kids prior to watching the movie. It was a great read, very action-packed. This book is basically the movie in book form down to every action scene and detail. It would be for an older reading level. I would say this book is suitable for an avid reader around 10-12 years of age but an average reader aged 12-14 years old. As an adult I struggled with some of the names in the book having not watched the movie. The story is started with a 12 year old Raya, who lives in Heart with her father. When her father is turned to stone she sets out on a journey to find the last dragon, Sisudatu, in hopes that she can restore life. There are no pictures besides a few pages (8-10ish) with images taken from the movie. There is a small fold out poster in the back of the book that is perforated and can be removed. We enjoyed the book and I feel like it made me and my kids appreciate the movie more. I caught more of the small details in the movie that I likely wouldn’t have picked up on without reading the book first.

I love it! There are a few little differences from the movie, but not really anything big. The cover of the book is gorgeous, and couldn’t be better. 11/10 would recommend

I started watching the movie but didn’t get very far into it before I had to leave. So I picked up the novelization to see what happened. I am an adult so I didn't expect to be wowed by literary genius. Part of the low rating is just that it’s a novelization of a movie and that kind of sucks regardless of how good the movie is. I think the movie would’ve been a lot better than reading this.I don’t want to say it was trash, because it wasn’t. But it’s clear that not much effort went into writing this. Which is a shame because I can tell the movie is pretty cute and not bad at all. The book makes the characters annoying and almost insufferable. I wouldn’t recommend picking this up.
