Q: are these blankets one or two layers?

1 layer 44"x44", you get 2 blankets, very soft and breathable, great for summer babies since they can easily overheat with other receiving blankets when swaddled, great for swaddling longer babies as well, my LO is 24in long and still has room to grow with it

Q: Will these be good for a 6month old?

Yes. We are currently using them to swaddle our new born. We also have a 2.5 year old that still uses the same kind and has since new born.

Q: Will these blankets be useful for cold weather? Our baby is going to be a fall baby and we experience severe winter in this part of the country. Do you think these blankets will still be handy?

The blankets are very light weight. So for cold winters they only might be useful in the house if it is really warm. Otherwise they will not be useful till summer.

Q: Are they each about 4ft x 4ft ?

Yep! The tag says 46x46. I've washed ours a few times, and they are still just about that size. I measured with a yardstick to make sure! :)
