It's around 1/2 to 3/4 inch. It's very small and if you hang it with the adhesive only, you can only put super light items on it or it tilts

Will the included tape destroy painted walls? (I know it says not for wallpaper)

yes! the shelf itself is good but the adhesive damaged my walls. made the paint & sheetrock come off. i recommend using screws to really secure it.
