New socket installed and tested. Didn’t work. 🫣 rather than panic I plugged this little tester in and found that the neutral wire had pulled out of the terminal while wrestling with the re-fitting of the new socket. Wiring sorted I plugged it back in and it worked fine. The audible beep (and lack thereof when no power is reaching it) was a good indication that I’d isolated the right circuit at the consumer unit. (If in doubt turn the whole supply off!). As a ray to use diagnostic tool for professional electricians and avid home gamers alike, this is invaluable to have in your tool bag.
