Galkyd lite as short time to use it
I have tried Galkyd lite twice. Both times it solidified and couldn’t be used. I tried adding gamsol solvent. That didn’t work. I was very disappointed. The gel Galkyd works well.

Supposed to hold brushwork better, but it levels out.
'Leveling' means the medium, with paint, smooths out as it dries to an enamel-like finish, hence the shine. This is advertised to maintain brush strokes and impasto. It doesn't. Not at all. However, its a nice base medium that has a little more body to it so you will get some nice brush flow, just not density, or texture. Gamblin, like other companies, sell a variety of products that they think have features that set each product apart. I've purchased and tried just about everything out there. This product is called lite, as opposed to their standard Galkyd, but they are both essentially identical. Galkyd is clear and dries quickly, a bit faster than Liquin, with a nice finish, semi-sheen, flows well as does Galkyd Lite, but no impasto. Wax is about the only additive to maintain a bit heavier brushwork, short of just using a lot more paint, like a stiff white. But wax dries matte so I avoid it because its difficult to match colors and I feel its a weaker additive. Galkyd mediums don't sink in as well as Liquin, but they excel at paint flow; when you want to do longer flowing strokes.Or make a copal medium. A classic is 1/3 damar, 1/3 copal medium, 1/3 turps, which is what a number of great illustrators, like the Leyendecker brothers, used when oils were about the only painting medium (early to mid 1900's). Studied up close, you can see the density of the brushwork and viscosity of the dried paint. Turps and damar will make any studio wreak, however, and turps is more toxic, but the drag and thickness you get from true Copal is what I think these companies are trying to duplicate with Alkyd, which is a synthetic resin, not natural.
