I only need transmitters.** A: No, the receivers are marked with R and transmitters with T. You could experiment and see. If you don't want to experiment, assume they are not the same and you must use R for receiver and T for a transmitter. **Q: Do these do their own tone generation/demodulation? Or are they effectively high-frequency speakers/mics and an external circuit does the processing?** A: They are effectively a high frequency speaker/mic **Q: Can you use this to measure flow rate in a pressurized water pipe? How about gas?** A: Most likely for water. For gas, it would depend on the gas density, and the sensitivity of your circuit. I was able to get some pretty precise nodes in my setup for other things, so provided you know the math needed to calibrate the system, it should get job done. Works as specified. I use them in robotics, and The last application was proximity sensing to a Magic Book for Halloween.
