Q: Has anyone used a spray on acrylic clear coat over these? I'm wondering if the colors will run.

I have use Modge Podge and it didn’t run or smear.

Q: Are these food safe? Need to color a cake topper.

Ok if you mean a cake topper that is like a cardboard like cut out that you paint with a little to a lot of paint from these pens and then you set aside till dry and add a layer of clear acrylic or like modge podge covering to set and prevent from running I think as long as what is inserted into the cake the rod or dowel or wire or what have that supports the cake topper would be FINE. Also if you painted a 3D figurine again as long as the paint is not in touch with the food why not it should be safe to use but do insure what ever you pick for the media beneath the paint you add an extra layer of protection over the paint to prevent any paint from flaking off onto your edibles be it a cake or a brownie bar or cupcakes even. I recommend if you want to add any glitter you search for FOOD SAFE GLITTER and only add over clear covered items also and don't offer for people to actually lick or eat or digest in anyway. But that way if you want to glam up your item you can be safe doing so. Addiing perhaps a glittered edge to the topper and edge rim aroun your cake or cakes frosted 3D glam bits too. Just use common sense people. And enjoy life but being safe. Have fun.

I used them for rocks so I'm sorry I don't know.
