I was dismayed by reviews of sour puss, so skipped it. Glad i didn't skip this one. It was a good read with the critters doing their part and a decent play on characters. Recommend.

Somehow I missed reading this one in sequence. As I read it, I was struck by how much better the story is than the more recent Sneaky Pie books. The latest ones are thin on plot, not much use of the ensemble characters (human and animal), and way too much speechifying about government. Also, I am thoroughly tired of the historical versus present-day dual plotting. Once was interesting. More than that is shtick.The book I am reviewing now has meat on its bones. The plot is interesting and not run of the mill. The animal characters are well used. Some of the human characters are real people. I thought I remembered seeing horses from Kalarama when I used to attend shows that had saddlebred classes. Sure enough.So I enjoyed the book, and if you like this series and accept its fantasy premises, you will like it, too. I'm just sorry for the reminder that the series has now worn down and just about worn out.

Everything was fine

There are far too many characters to easily keep up with. Usefully, the writing opens with a description of the cost of characters. They are all introduced in the first chapter (I think). This fits under the category of cozy mystery, complete with missing objects, murder, and social intrigue. I was not terribly interested in the horse motif that runs throughout the novel. I will be reading some of the more classic cozies in the future, as I was not terribly interested in the talking animals device employed.

Love this series! It's fun to read a mystery that is both from a human perspective and from a four pawed point of view. Keeps it interesting and the characters staying the same in each book makes one feel they are a part of the family...sharing a tale at a family reunion. I will be sad when I get to the last book. At least that is a few books away yet!☺

Lots going on here. Harry and Fair are in Shelbyville, Kentucky visiting friends. Murphy, Tucker and Pewter are front and center. All of the other people, cats, dogs and horses are new. It's important to pay attention in order to follow the quick-moving story and a long list of characters. Happy reading!

I am a fan Mrs Murphy Mysteries. I am reading them in the order they were written. I love the character development of humans and animals. I love all of the characters of the small town of Crozet, Virginia. This story doesn't take place in that town. Harry is newly married and on a honeymoon at a horse show. Horses are a frequent theme since Harry loves horses and her husband is horse veterinarian. I won't give away the plot. But I know most readers will enjoy the change of location and characters.

Great read

A delightful read as alway, in the company of old friends. I love the cosiness of Crozet' microcosm, which is nevertheless never too far from our daily subjects of preoccupations, be they how to make ends meet, or how cancer touches a vast majority of us either directly or through our loved ones. Here's to wishing Rita Mae & Sneaky Pie a long collaboration & many more books !

Vielleicht nutzt sich eine Krimibuchserie einfach nur mit der Zeit ab, weil man sich zu sehr an die Charaktere gewöhnt. Aber dieser Band hat mich nicht mehr so gepackt wie die ersten Bände der Reihe.Die mehr als ausführliche Beschreibung der verschiedenen Pferdezuchten ist nicht nur für die Handlung überflüssig, sie macht das Buch auch recht langatmig.Und wie auch "Leserin" bereits geschrieben hat, muten die Ansichten der Autorin über große Autos versus Umweltschutz und die Freigabe von Doping schon sehr merkwürdig an. Auch sie sind zudem für die Handlung nicht zielführend.3 Sterne dennoch, weil die eigentliche Mordstory und ihre Aufklärung handwerklich ordentlich gemacht ist, auch wenn man ziemlich schnell den Kreis der Verdächtigen eingrenzen kann.

ich war vom ersten buch an eingefleischter mrs. murphy-fan, aber das ist mit sicherheit das letzte buch das ich aus dieser reihe lese - wenn ich es denn überhaupt fertig lese. das ist kein krimi sondern eine vorbereitung für den abschluss in pferdezucht! seitenlang werden die vorteile verschiedener zuchtmerkmale behandelt und warum es besser ist dass manche pferde einen stärkeren knochen über dem huf haben oder nicht (das hab ich noch nicht mal verstanden - bin ich veterinär?). und mit erhobenem zeigefinger: viele trainer überfordern ihre pferde und dann folgt eine kurze abhandlung warum und wie man es richtig macht. und wenn es nicht um pferdezucht geht, dann werden mir die überzeugungen und meinungen von mrs. brown mit dem holzhammer eingebläut: zur umweltverschmutzung, zur korruptheit mildtätiger organisationen (es lohnt sich ihrer meinung nach daher nicht, wohltätig zu sein) oder warum es gerechtfertigt ist, große autos zu fahren (die industrie verschmutzt die umwelt mehr als alle autos). wie bitte?? die meiste zeit fühle ich mich schulmeisterlich abgekanzelt. einen intelligenten und unterhaltsamen krimi wollte ich lesen. ich vermisse die vielfältigen charaktere aus den früheren büchern, die sind fast alle verschwunden, das postoffice existiert nicht mehr. die beziehung all der menschen zueinander, deren schilderung einen großteil des unwiderstehlichen charmes ausmachte, wird nicht mehr behandelt. auch die vierbeinigen hauptdarsteller laufen nur mehr so am rande mit. schade, ich werde die ersten bücher noch einmal lesen aber mit sicherheit keine weiteren aus dieser serie.
