Case Medium Amberbone CV Stockman Pocket Knife

Sadly, I lost my only Case knife that was presented to my Father by General D.D. Eisenhower for his service to him during WWII. It wasn’t a special knife emblazoned with Dad’s three stars or anything like, or otherwise specially made for him by Case, just a knife with a letter from then Gen. Eisenhower thanking Dad for his working with him all through the war. I’ve owned it since my Father died in 1998. Then, about two weeks ago, I lost it—somehow, somewhere. But in my heart, I felt I had to replace it with the same knife—this Amber CV Stockman. It turns out they weren’t quite the same in coloring, but it will do. As to this knife, it’s very beautiful, has a nice heft to it as it seems to be a little heavier. However, I thought it best to warn the buyer of any Case three-bladed knife, that the Clip blade will rub against the Sheepfoot blade leaving a mark on the near side of the Sheepfoot blade and on the opposite of the Clip blade. I called Amazon about it and they replaced the knife and it was even worse as the pen blade also rubbed against the Sheepfoot blade causing the same mar against it and the Sheepfoot blade. I called Case and they told me that it’s part of owning a three-bladed knife. However, the pen blade should never have rubbed up against the Sheepfoot and was indeed a manufacture flaw and somehow slipped through their rather strict QA team, so I returned that one to Amazon, and kept the one with the lesser of two evils. I can’t say I love this knife as much as I did my Father’s, but I really do love this knife. In fact, I plan on purchasing a Bonestag Trapper, a Trapperlock and a Canoe and a few others as a small collection. Similar to buying a mobile phone one buys the real thing—an iPhone, when one wishes to purchase a pocket knife, it has to be a Case. For what each makes, they are the best—hands down, no questions asked!

The only reason for 3 instead of 5 stars,,,,I ordered based on the site info for this knife. It says Chrome Vanadium steel blades “CV” in the description but the 6318 SS knife I received was the correct looking and size knife but it has Stainless steel blades And the Pen blade turned out to be a Spey blade. I wanted the CV steel with the Pen blade. The knife is Excellent I do not doubt the quality. I’ll keep it but wish it had arrived as advertised.

I bought this item to add to knife collection. I have a special collection of Stockmans. UNLIKE every other Stockman knife I own (50+ stockmans by various knife-makers) this one was scratched up from the get go with blades that don't close properly. The sheeps foot blase does not fully close as it should and its tip is off center relative to the clip point (main blade). This not only prevents the clip point from properly closing, but a ugly radial gouge is on its face from being opened across the sheeps foot tip. I've never carried this knife and have only opened it a couple of times as a result. What is wrong here is that the blades are a bit off and CASE quality control failed to catch the error. So, a clinker leaked out . . . when I wrote to CASE about the problem I received and nice (yet slightly condescending) response explaining "blade rub" to me. I'm a mechanical engineer, and as you can imagine wasn't as appreciative of the "explanation" as you might think. The customer service representative assured me that this was "normal" for a Stockman knife pattern--three blades are just too many for a pocket knife. I own lots and lots of slip joint pocket knives. There's a Rough Ryder where somebody thought 6 blades seemed like a clever idea. In no other case do I have a new, unused, knife where the blades don't close properly or that there is so much blade rub that one blade to destroying another. HOW IS THIS NORMAL? As far as Knife for the dollar I'm going to have to say that IMHO Case knives are not worth it. I'd go with the Chinese made Rough Ryder, German made Boker or Spanish made Hen & Rooster. These other knives, in my experience, have better quality relative to price.

I purchased this for my birthday. I have always used the cheap, chinese made pocket knives sold at the hardware store and have wondered if I was missing out. Now I can be assured that I am not. I was severely disappointed by the quality of this knife. I have about 6 cheap knives in my drawer and this one is second to only one of them in order of poor fit and finish. Sure, the scales look good, that is where the positive really ends. The blades rub together so that after opening each blade two or three times there are scratches on all blades. The small pen blade can not even be opened because it catches on the nail notch of the sheep's foot blade. On the two larger blades the spring does not fully sit flush when the blades are opened. There are gaps. All edges are rounded off in the lock up. It came dull (unable to cut paper). Above all else, I judge this knife on the essence of being a knife. The blades were all ground uneven both front to back and at completely, visibly, different angles on each side of the blade, which makes this kind of a knife severely frustrating to put an edge on because unless I reset the entire bevel I have to change angles on the stone for each side of the blade. There is wiggle room side to side on the blades. My 12 dollar Frost Steel Warrior puts this knife to shame. I really really wanted to like this knife. I even had a dream about it as I waited for it to come in the mail. I wanted to be proud to have another knife made by Americans. I would not have been so disappointed if there wasn't so much hype about 'American Craftsmanship' in this brand of knife. Anyone who claims this knife comes razor sharp and is a true example of a fine knife needs to hold a real knife and maybe pick up a razor sometime as these things are not present in this product. I might have just received the bottom of the barrel but I am not about to invest any more time or energy in this knife or in Case products. If I want American I will get a Buck USA or Bark River, or any of the hundreds of truly good knife makers who are producing quality.

The fit and finish on this knife was good. The bone covers have a nice feel to them and are well polished from bolsters to back springs. Excellent walk and talk on the sheepsfoot and pen blade which share a back spring, opening and closing with a good crisp snap. However, the spring on the main clip blade is a fairly weak. It opens a closes with a dissatisfying, lazy sigh. I mainly use the pen blade for whittling so not a deal breaker. The factory grinds on all three blades were atrocious...terribly uneven. Maybe not something most folks would notice, but I had to reprofile them right out of the box or it was going to drive me up the wall. Their factory sharpness also left a lot to be desired. The best feature of this knife is Case's CV blade steel. It's was very easy to hone to a scary sharp edge once I straightened out the factory bevels. This is a decent knife, you just might need to work on it a little to bring it to its full potential.
