NO, This item is works on with any rim exit devices with a Pullman Latchbolt. It does not work on a vertical rod device. We can offer other options for what you have.

Does this make a sound when it is used?

I assume that you are referring to the buzzing noise made by some strikes. This unit does not buzz. It makes a small click when energized. This is the sound of the solenoids retracting the locking bars. The buzzing only occurs with AC powered strikes. It is actually the sound of the 50-60 hertz of alternating current. The Hess 9600 is DC and therefor does not buzz.
