These versatile little plates are made of fused glass. They consist of a clear glass base, an opaque black center with white decorative dots. There are 2 in the set. Each plate is approximately 6 x 6 inches. To create a fused plate is at least a 2 step process. First the glass is stacked and heated in a glass kiln to over 1400 degrees to fuse the pieces. Then the panel of fused glass is balanced on a ceramic mold and re-heated to "slump" into the configuration of that mold. The heat "fire polishes" the glass, pleasing the eye and inviting one's touch. Along the way, small variations occur, sometimes air bubbles or wavy edges. All this adds to the uniqueness and beauty of the pieces. Hand washing is recommended.
