does this work in an outside environment with lots of light?

Yes, it can definitely be used outdoors! As long as there is a surface the laser can come in contact with, it can measure distances indoors and outdoors. If you need to measure a distance with no surface, then we recommend using our target plates to accurately measure the distance you need :)

Does it have a tape measurer mode for measuring when there are no walls (like a kitchen island or a piece of futniture)?

Unfortunately, there is no function like a tape measurer mode. If you want to measure the non-reflective material, you can measure it by using the Pythagorean mode.

How far out will the laser beam show outdoors?

I was able to measure 75 ft., but I have no idea what I was measuring, as there's no way you can see the tiny laser dot in full daylight. There's also no analog site to help you aim at a target. I was able to measure my garage door from 50 ft. away though, with no problem. Still couldn't see the dot, but hitting the broad side of a barn is a lot easier than hitting a 4x4 post.

When in bilateral mode, where is the 0 point on the laser?laser

To answer your question, the center appears to be somewhere on the right side of the LCD display on the device, to the left of the power button. It has arrows above and below the power button that would lead you to believe that's the center point, but in my trials, it is not. As another person mentioned, the center of the device doesn't really matter, as it compensates for the length of the device.
