Five Ten Freerider Pro Mountain Bike Shoes

I read a ton of online reviews before buying these shoes, mostly because I figured that another large company like Giro or Shimano or Specialized would have produced another all-around/somewhat gravity oriented shoe that is a little lighter or looks a little better or is a little cheaper than the Five-Ten FreeRider Pro's. Since I couldn't make a decision, I bought all of the competitor's shoes and the FreeRider Pro's and tried them all out. The FreeRider Pro's were the only ones that I didn't send back. Personally, I don't think they're particularly good looking shoes - they look a bit clunky in the photos online. This clunkiness (for lack of a better word) is reduced in real life. They still don't look great, but it's not nearly as noticeable as it is online. Everything else about the shoe is perfect. There are no compromises. These things are well cushioned and comfortable out of the box. They're the goldilocks level of stiff, same goes for the weight. I live on the east coast (big temperature swings) and when it's hot these shoes breathe well and my feet aren't overly sweaty; yet somehow when it's cold my feet are well insulated. They're also mostly waterproof. Five-Ten is owned by Adidas and sizing is true to Adidas athletic shoe sizing. I'm a 10.5 in Adidas and a 10.5 in these. I have a narrow foot but the toe box would accommodate a wider foot easily. In short, these are shoes that you buy and never think about again. I've done everything from east coast chunky riding to slickrock in Moab to pure downhill in Deer Valley on these things. The shoes were never on my mind during the ride. They do what they're supposed to - keep you attached to the pedals and having fun.

Love these shoes for cycling with . Stiff heavy thick bottom shoe. Plays really well with platform pedals that have pins. I use One Ups and the combo of the two pedals is magical. Amazing foot retention. And to be honest -- the shoe is more of an improvement in foot retention than the pedal. If you can only afford one upgrade right now do the shoes. The shoes are very big and heavy compared to other shoes. The weight isn't a problem for me and I enjoy the added stiffness and thickness of the material all around. But the size is a bit big to use with my bike that uses toeclips. These shoes are not for that though so not complaining. They work will off the bike too, not the most optimal walking shoe but I do end up walking in them a lot. The shoe itself is stiff enough that I feel comfortable wearing it at work (I work in film/tv and you need something generally protective on your foot). They are not ugly which is a plus. Makes it acceptable cycle to work without changing shoes. They are however a little squeaky on some floors which can pose a problem uniquely for me as the sound engineer. I size up a half size, normally a 10.5 I wear 11s. Part of that is the fit, the other part is that I wear these more often in colder weather so like having thicker socks. For whatever that is worth. I go through a pair of these every 2 years. The sole doesn't really wear out to were its unusable on the bike. But eventually the part where your toe bends when you walk creates a crease that eventually cracks and opens up. I still use em like that for a while but they lose any water resistance they had before. If you dont walk much in them they will probably last longer.

After reading reviews of how stiff this shoe is, I was surprised at how comfortable and easy to walk with it actually is. This is a really good biking shoe (even for us commuter e-bikers). It has great grip on the pedals, protects your feet and toes from the sometimes harsh realities of biking, and when you get off the bike they are perfectly fine for walking around (OK - they aren’t running shoes, but they’ve got plenty of flex and cushion for strolling around). I generally wear a US size 10 D sneaker, and this shoe in size 10 is a perfect fit. Highly recommended!

I'm not going to deduct any stars because of this, but just be aware that these shoes fit smaller than the size would indicate. My size 10.5 is really more like a 10. They are too narrow and too short. My orthotic inserts barely fit in them, which is a clear indication that the shoes are undersized. All that said, they appear durable and work quite well. They work much better than the sneakers I was wearing and they grip the platform pedals much better. I bought them about 9 months ago and they have worked well. The are not as comfortable as they would be if the manufacturer had not undersized them. I was actually going to order a size 11, but I see that the price has gone up from $76 to $101, so I'll have to re-evaluate and compare with other offerings currently available. At the time, the price was very competitive.

These shoes surprised me. I measured my foot using a tape measure from my heel to my longest toe. 11.5 is my size. I ordered the 11.5 assuming no issues. When I first put them on, they felt very off. Such as the shoe felt very stiff. I attribute this to their impact resistant material. Further, it felt very tight, especially on the sides (I have large/wide feet). And there was a lump-like feeling when just standing and walking with them. I was beginning to regret my purchase, but this is why I will absolutely not return it and instead loved it 10× more than I could of thought initially. Here is what I did: 1) I immediately loosened the laces. -That fixed the tightness a bit. The shoe felt very "snug". But not completely comfortable yet... 2) I forced myself to wear the shoe for 1 to 2 days, and then a bike ride or two. -This fixed the following: •Tightness was gone, it felt comfortable and it definitely widened according to my foot size. •The stiffness was not as noticeable as well. I attribute this to the shoe widening a bit to my foot. •Lump was not noticeable either, so I assume my body weight, down pressure, and wearing it for 1 to 2 days definitely helped bring the feeling of a lump down. After those negatives were taken care of, i must say the shoe looks legit. It definitely protects your toes and the sides of your feet. And the grip, my goodness, the grip is perfect for those who ride with clipless pedals or just want more grip when sending it downhill. The shoe gave me confidence when coming down rock gardens, loose dirt, ruts from rain, stumps, and jumps. This shoe does add to your mountain biking ability because of how well it performs under those conditions. If you want a shoe that wont slip while riding. This is it. It is expensive, but i rather feel secure riding than slip and potentially go over the bars or get into an accident. Also, it does help a lot on those long climbs. And it doesn't feel uncomfortable anymore. Worth spending the money IMO. Before you give up on them, try a size up too. It takes sometime for sure, just to get used to this shoe. But the benefits are worth it.

I don't normally take the time to leave reviews, but these shoes warrant the time. I like the freedom of not having my shoes mounted to the pedals. My regular athletic shoes caused my feet to arch around the pedals and my ankles to overwork with each stroke. These shoes are moderately firm on the bottom, so my feet and ankles are stable. They feel great! Today, I came home from a long mountain bike ride without any ankle or foot soreness. The fit was spot-on with typical name-brand running shoes (normal to have 1/2" breadth behind the heel when the foot is slid all the way forward). The insoles are removable, and I replaced them with an arch-supporting insole like I do with all my athletic shoes. The shoes have generous toe boxes, and I could easily walk a distance in them. I'm pleased in every way with these shoes!

For years I heard that 5/10 is the best by far, but when i had LEAT DBX - I couldn't imagine by how much the 5/10 is superior and the difference is huuuuge. Freerider Pro is a perfect shoe for me: it's form is long enough, not wide - so it grips the whole feet, which you really want, because the mass and impacts goes well distributed. In LEAT for example you have a really wide shoe so all the impacts go into your nails, yes yes - i had(and still have) blood under nails from riding technical trails in LEAT. Freerider Pro, you must take a bit bigger size(i am 45, so i took 45 2/3, fits perfect). It's water resistant so its good and not perfect for hot weather because you are sealed with no ventilation at all, and if you do 5-7 hours in them....vent your legs from time to time :) The Grip is phenomenal, actually I forgot that there is a grip problems that people are struggling and talking....with 5/10 you just have always grip and comfort.

I've got crank brothers non metallic pedals on my bike. Rode many miles just riding with just sneakers. These have drastically improved my stability, grip, and confidence on my bike. I'm not quite ready to be clipped in (not sure if I'll ever be), and wanted a good flat pedal shoe. These work as advertised and are highly rated in the mountain bike community as one of the best flat pedal shoes - they live up to their rating. The sizing is accurate to what you wear normally, and can even "pull" my pedals up when I want to. I've also found that my feet don't' come off the pedals near as much even when I'm on bumpy terrain and i'm not putting as much pressure on my feet.

Good fit, well made, comfortable, and just the job for my cycling.... I'd give them 6 stars if I could.
