As played by two-time Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement), Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope is “nothing less than a TV institution” (Mail on Sunday, UK). In this collection of Sets 1-5, the caustic but brilliant detective solves horrendous crimes in the remote corners of rural Northumberland.Aided by right-hand man DS Joe Ashworth (David Leon, RocknRolla) and later by troubled DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty, Stella), Vera contends with the untamed evil that lurks below the surface and exposes the demons that plague even those who dedicate their lives to good.Based on the bestselling novels of Ann Cleeves, this atmospheric drama delivers compelling characters, superb performances, and suspenseful mysteries. Guest stars include Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey), Julie Graham (The Bletchley Circle), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), John Lynch (The Fall), Gina McKee (Notting Hill), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), and Judy Parfitt (Call the Midwife).

Great series!
This is a wonderful mystery series. Vera is a DCI with an attitude. Her sergeant calls her 'Mussolini' and it fits.If you like British murder mysteries, you will love this one...but make no mistake. This is not 'Midsomer Murders' and the crimes are not presented 'tongue in cheek'. These murders are sad and awful and the solutions are often heartbreaking. If you are easily moved to tears, this isn't one you want to watch. If, however, you love great acting, great writing, and really interesting puzzles, Vera is a great choice!

Excellent mysteries. Excellent cast.
I've seen Vera listed on Amazon for a few years, but never quite purchased any of the episode.I've viewed all episodes for all 5 seasons and these are great mysteries. My charming wife and I have viewed ALL episodes of Midsomer Murders, Foyle's War, Inspector Lewis, etc., and Vera is right up there with the best of 'em.Great cast of characters, excellent storylines, a little less violent than some of the others, and the northern England seaside locations are superb. You will not be disappointed.

Great, character-driven series.
In the tradition of this style of mystery, the plot unfolds at a slow but steady pace. The stories are decidedly not action-packed, but they are interesting, and more about motivation and human fallacy than most mysteries. The slower pace fits the gorgeous but sometimes bleak, stony setting of Northumberland. Vera, grumpy, sloppy, uneasy around children and couples, and probably a full-blown alcoholic, is a surpringly relatable and comfortable detective. The more you watch, the more affection you feel for her (due entirely, I'm sure, to Brenda Blethyn's brilliant portrayal of her.) This series gets addictive, and is well worth watching.

Discs don’t work in the USA or Canada
This dvd does not work for region 1 DVD players. I did not know DVD’s were regional nor did I know this dvd would not work in the United States. I bought this as a Christmas gift for my mother in law. She did not try to watch the discs until February. When we found out they can’t be watched here I tried to return the discs. Since I bought them a few months prior they would not accept the return there should a warning on these discs that they don’t work in Canada or the USA unless you have a special DVD player.

Wonderful actors, scenery, and tight keep-you-guessing mystery
Wonderful series. Can't wait for further installments. It's like a beautiful travelogue of English North Country as most of the scenes employ the sea and old stately mansion. The characters are enjoyable and the murders proceed without too much uncomfortable violence or gore. My husband and I love this series for "Dinner and a Movie" at home.

If you have watched some of the better Brit shows, writers & actors, the series is more enjoyable
Well written, well acted, and always seems to expose some basic human foible At the heart of the train wreck conclusions. we bought this Set to be able to rewatch the ongoing series that we have watched from the beginning. If you watch the series, you will find actors like Cush Jumbo & others reappear in UK/US series like The Good Wife &The Good Fight. Good to stave off these mind numbing Sparse media times! Last comment does not apply to Prime which has its own excellent series and also has BritBox as a worthwhile add on that features this ongoing Vera series.

Kudos to Brenda, Writers, Directors and Cast
I love the British mysteries and police procedurals, but this series is by far my favorite -- especially the first 4 series. I've watched all the series, straight through to current series 9, and look forward to many new seasons to come. I highly recommend this series -- you may not always like Vera's personality quirks, but you will forgive them and love her for them anyway. She expertly knows how to hide a "soft heart."

Good show - but a bit difficult to understand for the average American
Like some other reviewers have posted, the scenery is stunning in these shows. But the linguistics will have you looking at your co-viewers and saying, "did you understand what they said," several times each show. The longer you watch it, you kinda get used to it. But, you can catch enough of the dialogue to keep up with the show. Due to the language barrier, though, I won't be ordering further episodes.

Top Quality Police Drama
I really like Vera, the Detective Chief Inspector played by the wonderful Brenda Blethynand her top quality ensemble of detectives. Set in Newcastle upon Tyne and the magnificentbrooding countryside of Northumberland it is a joy to watch.I like the surrogate mother-son relationship between Vera and DS Joe Ashworth brilliantlyplayed by David Leon in the first four series. The series lost something for me when David Leon left to forward his career in productionand direction. The new guy, DS Aiden Healy played by Kenny Doughty seems lost and less effective than Joe, with little chemistry between the two main characters. Perhaps thewriters have yet to create a real personna for Healy who does not appear to have anythingto contribute other than plod along. All in all I find this series captivating, if a little annoying watching DS Healy under perform.Subtitled in EnglishViewing time of 1775 minutes approx.

Vera Series1-5
I am really enjoying watching Vera. The DVDs definitely arrived in good time and picture and sound are great. But one strange thing about Vera Series 1-5 (I am in Australia by the way) Series 1-4 and Series 7 play on my Region 4 Panasonic Player but Series 5 Disc 1 and 2 needed to be played on my All Regions Player. How strange is that.
