All you need to know about pipe sizes
The clamp fittings themselves are good, and seem up to the job. The casting finish is not first class, but good enough - a thin pad of plywood or plastic glued to the clamp faces will prevent marking. The clamping threads are better than I was anticipating, of better quality steel, and run fairly smoothly, except for a few millimetres at the extreme ends of travel (a bit of oil or grease helps). They appear to be made on a hand operated lathe by some poor sod who probably has to make dozens of these an hour for a pittance; this means it is hard for them to care too much about what they are doing, so there is some discrepancy in the length and runout of these threads, which results in a slight variation in clamping travel. Some people are misunderstanding how pipe sizes work, and are ending up disappointed, while others are giving wrong advice.Pipe is normally measured internally, as opposed to tube, which is measured externally. Suitable pipe is covered by an old imperial British Standard that's still in use today. It's a nominal standard, rather than an actual measurement, and specifies pipe sizes and threads. Thus 3/4" British Standard Pipe is based on a notional internal dimension, and so the specified outside diameter will be larger than its nominal dimension. In this instance, 3/4" BSP has an OD of slightly more than 1". This is what you need for these clamps. It also follows that a thread cut into the outside of such a pipe will also have a diameter that is larger than 3/4". However, it is described as a 3/4" BSP thread. Being a nominal size, it is not based on the size of the thread, but on the notional internal diameter of the pipe that the thread belongs to. Americans have their own version of this which they call NPT. For the purposes of these clamps, 3/4" BSP is close enough to 3/4" NTP for them to be interchangeable. So, these clamps take 3/4" BSP, with a 3/4" BSP thread cut on one end (3/4" NTP if you're in America). The pipe must have this thread because one part of the clamp screws onto the end of the pipe. The wrong pipe will have the wrong thread, and it won't fit, but the correct pipe will result in a clamp that has a good, sturdy bar of over 1" in section. If you get pipes with both ends threaded, then you can, with a coupler (called a socket), extend the pipe to whatever length you need. You are unlikely to find suitable pipe at any DIY store, but there are several online outlets, or go to a plumber's merchant, for '3/4" iron pipe' (it's actually mild steel, but any plumber's merchant will know what you mean), often also called 'black pipe', or sometimes (incorrectly) 'malleable pipe'. The important thing is that you need 3/4" pipe with a 3/4" BSP thread on at least one end. It is often supplied, ready cut and threaded, in convenient lengths. If you buy sockets as well, these will be made of what is correctly called 'malleable iron'. Don't be tempted by electrical conduit - it looks similar and is cheaper, but it's lighter, weaker, measured differently, and the threads are different. At the time of writing, a metre of pipe, threaded on both ends, can be had for under a tenner, so, with these fittings you get decent sash cramps for less than 20 quid each. Bargain.
