Yes, the right handed person would use their thumb to retract the blade. The left handed person would use their index finger instead.

Q: Does the blade stay out until you release it?

No-it fits nicely between your fingers and thumb, and retracts as soon as you release it. It’s near use, I’ve found is for opening packages, moving boxes, or cutting off clothing tags. I keep them sprinkled in drawers around the house to be able to quickly open packaging. I also kept some in my car, to be ready to start unpacking after a move.

Q: Can I replace the blade?

Yes the blades are replaceable. Be sure to get the correct size, take pictures before. 1)locate the back of the disk, 2)using the tip of the finger or fingernail to press firmly down on the seam at the edge3) once the the inner part pops up you can change the blade.
