Classic.
I wanted to revisit this film from my youth. Cassic scene where John Cusack is holding the boom box over his head to serenade the woman he loves. Sweet love story.

A classic 80’s ROM COM that stands the test of time
"Say Anything" is like that perfect entrepreneurial idea that just clicks – it's a classic, a game-changer, and an absolute winner. This movie has all the elements of a fantastic story wrapped up in a heartwarming, witty, and charming package that'll resonate with your generation and beyond. Now, let's talk about the characters, starting with Lloyd Dobler, played by John Cusack. He's not your typical leading man, and that's what makes him so endearing. His quirky charm and unwavering optimism are infectious. He's like the entrepreneur who defies the odds and wins you over with his sheer determination.Diane Court, portrayed by Ione Skye, is the perfect foil to Lloyd. She's smart, ambitious, and a character you can root for. Her journey of self-discovery and the way she handles the challenges in her life is both progressive and relatable. But what really sets "Say Anything" apart is its ability to blend humor and heartache seamlessly. It's a masterclass in witty dialogue and genuine emotion. The humor in the movie hooks you in with laughter, and then the emotional depth hits you like a powerful sales pitch. And who can forget that iconic boombox scene? It's like the moment when a brilliant marketing campaign goes viral – unforgettable and a game-changer. It's the ultimate declaration of love and persistence, something any entrepreneur can appreciate. The soundtrack is a true gem, (especially if you are from Seattle!) filled with upbeat tunes classic grunge anthems that perfectly complement the tone of the film.

Holds Up!
I rented this to watch with my son. It’s as good as I remember. The Peter Gabriel scene is iconic. It wasn’t too old to no longer be relevant.

Fantastic romantic comedy
Cusack and Skye have awesome chemistry and the other actors are also really very good. The iconic moment in the film is probably one with which you're already familiar--when Cusack holds up a boombox to Skye's window playing Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." I never tire of this film.

I hope I'm never too old
My wife and I saw this film when it was first released. We saw it once. That was enough to make me want it on DVD. While the details were hazy for my wife (I think that's a gift sometimes since after a while things still seem new to her) I remembered almost everything about the film, it's story and characters, after all these years. John Cusack and Joan Cusack as acting brother and sister was a nice touch. Ione Skye as Diane had such a warmth and sincerity as she tried to mix with Loyd and his world while drawing him into hers that you knew these two had to be a match from the start. John has had an arresting every man quality in his film career. As Loyd, despite the age and difference in experiences, I saw a kindered spirit (I know, why bother with this overused "revelation", but this really was odd, because everybody wants to relate to characters they like but in this case I had no choice). I started my adult life a lot like Loyd was starting his, albeit 10 years before the film. Art imitating life became a real concept. Needless to say that was quite a hook. Sorry for the digression into my life. Anyway take those similarities (pathetic as that may come off) and couple that with insights about young adults which are really timeless and acting that never feels like acting, and this resulting film had me. I can't help but think that every generation needs a story like this one. Timeless as it is at it's heart, people too often need something that is easy for them to relate to. Window dressing is all it takes to draw in the crowd to get the same truths. Cameron Crowe has delivered a teen film that is not a teen film. I hope the young audience today will find this as easy to watch as I did with 10 years out but still related to this story.I like the extras. They don't add anything to the story but they are fun to see. I'm particularly surprised to hear the music that was used in the Boom Box scene outtakes. It was good music but it seemed out of place with the scene. I'm glad they went with the one used in the film.

Very Decent Coming of Age Drama
This is a good film. A solid drama dealing with coming of age and romance in a very real way. But even though it is sometimes listed as comedy, I would most definitely not describe it as such and anybody expecting a frothy romcom will likely be disappointed. The story is that of the girl Diane (Ione Skye), a top of the class student, daughter of divorced parents and living with her father (John Mahoney, best known as Frasier's dad Martin) who runs a nursing home. He wants the very best for his daughter and spoils her accordingly. He is also overly protective and objects to her friendship with the decent but unambitious boy Derek (John Cusack) whom he deems not good enough for her. However, not everybody is all they seem to be and Diane's perfect world starts crumbling as she finds out what is really important in life. The characters all feel refreshingly real. Some are likable - others not so much. The acting is solid. And while I personally never saw the attraction of John Cusack as romantic lead, I will put that down to personal taste and will be quick to add that his performance here is excellent and that he is very well cast. Ione Skye works well as the female lead, I enjoyed seeing John Mahoney, and as I have already mentioned 'Frasier' (which I can't help being reminded of whenever I see him) it may be worth mentioning that Bebe Neuwirth (Lilith from Frasier) also appears in a small supporting role.Good film and though it is by now thirty years old and some aspects are distinctly dated (first and foremost the fashion), much of the story is as relevant today as it was in the late 1980s. Definitely a film I can recommend.
