Q: I have a 2 1/2 year old grandson that loves music, sings, and banging on things, would this be a good first instrument for him?

If he likes banging on things, get him a brick or a piece of wood. Why let him destroy a perfectly good practice pad?

Q: how loud is this drum? is it suitable for apartment living?

I have one of these Remo practice pads, and I don't like it because it is too loud (I gave it to my son). It wouldn't be too loud for an apartment (it probably won't annoy the neighbors). I just thought it was too loud for me. I didn't like listening to it while I practiced.I much prefer the RealFeel by Evans. It's made of rubber with a solid wood base, so it has very good bounce, and is much quieter than the Remo pad. The Evans is solid, with a really good feel to it. Mount it in a snare stand, and you have an extremely nice practice pad setup. The Evans costs more, but it's worth it. I felt the Remo was a waste of money.

Q: how good is it for practice

I bought this pad for my 11 y/o daughter at the recommendation of her band leader. She is not however very musical so I do not know if it is good for practice. It was however a rec from someone who knows. It is very sturdy for the job.

No it is just a pad...no snares are on the practice pad.
