Q: will a pump fit inside and allow external plumbing

Yes a pump will fit. On the right side of the skimmer (looking from the front/open skimmer side) Is where the pump fits. There is also a cut out by the top where the hose and cord coming from the pump fit. The size of the pump is important. Too small and it's not strong enough. Too big and it won't fit. I started with a 2000 gph pump, tried a 700 gph pump and ended up with a 1300 gph pump.

Q: What are the maximum pump dimensions for this product? Can you recommend a suitable model?

Thanks for your inquiry. I'm afraid I don't have the exact measurements onhand, however, the skimmer actually has a larger pump compartment than you would expect. Most of the time you'll hit the 1800 gph maximum before the pump is too large. I recommend the Danner/Pondmaster 02728.
