Q: Can someone please explain how this assembles ? the instructions were terrible !

There are various options regarding the out put. You will need to determine what works best for your application. Because this is a secondary filter for my application - I chose to leave the difference heads off and just let the filtered water come out the opening.

Q: whitch one of these filters works good on a 10 gallon tank

I'm using it in a 5 gallon tank. The Beta was getting pushed around by most other filters. I would suggest a filter bigger then the 50 for a 10 gallon tank.

Q: does it need cartridges

No filter ever actually needs the cartridges they give you. You can swap them out for sponge, ceramic media, etc. All filters are built with a hold where the cartridges or media go. They're all the same, really. They try to sell you on cartridges, to keep making money off you, when a sponge being rinsed out in a bucket of the tank water (when doing a water change) keeps the sponge going for a year or more. Just make sure when you do switch medias out, that some of the previous media stays in, as that's where all the bacteria lives that keeps the tank from crashing out.

Probably Not. You need a Rio power head that will pump a certain amount of water per hour at a height of 2 ft. This pump just barely gets any water that high. You might have to go to the Rio 90 or 180. Go to Rio/Taam's web site and check each pump's flow rate at various heights and pick one that has good flow at 2ft.
