Q: can you see the front and back of the photo/card or is there fabric or something inside the plastic inserts?

Yes there is an insert in each plastic page so you do not see front or back of photos.

Q: Are there removable pins used to hold the sleeves?

Rachel, No, I checked and the pins at both the front and back are covered by the interior velvet binding that is their width and has been glued the length of the binding to hide them. The glue is so secure you would damage the interior velvet lining if you tried to access the screws. I have owned scrapbooks w/removable pins, but these are not. The albums are beautiful of high quality. Hope this helps.

Q: what is the actual size of the plastic sleeves - how much larger than 5 x 7?

The width is 5 inches but the length is about 7 3/4 inches.I have 5 by 7's in mine and there is extra room on the length.
