The metal outside is a nice touch and it's much slimmer then the plastic versions. The contacts you have to solder are small and fidly but with a bit of flux and pre-tinning both the wire and the contact is very doable without burning the plastic.My package also contained rubber inserts for strain relief of smaller diameter cables. I didn't use them because my cable was quite thick but they're good to have.

These units are good quality BUT...I gave them one star to get your attention These are not designed to be soldered in the normal DIY sense. The connections are microscopically small. The whole system will melt. Don't be fooled by the 'I must have fat fingers' comments...these are a specialty item for specialty connectors. NOT FOR HOBBY SOLDERING. You have been warned.

These are decent jacks, but they're only for people with advanced to expert level soldering skills. The soldeing rings are very small and the plastic is not at all heat tolerant, so you need to do some prep by sanding the rings slightly, using liberal amounts of flux and pre-tinning the tiny wire leads used in headphone cords.It took me about an hour to replace the jack on my headphones from start to finish. The only thing I didn't like about these is the rubber boot is too small and required a lot of effort to get around the cut wire. It's also a split mould rubber, which makes it subject to breakage at the parting line. I would have liked to see a solid moulded rubber boot.If you don't have advanced soldering skills, I do not recommend these jacks. I would instead recommend buying a whole wire pigtail assembly and just replacing the entire wire up to the headphones. If you have headphones with an in-line volume controller, just replace it up to there instead.

Using these to plug in on all my devices that have been used to eavesdrop wherever I am. I have a serious situation, but suffice to say these are very handy to temporarily or intermittently secure my devices from being used to eavesdrop. The caps of these screw off for those that want to solder and build with them. I screwed off the caps and glued them back on, as I am only using them to plug the microphone sound in/sound out features of a laptop and smart phone. In fact, I am going to order more to give to some various professionals I know. I also use electrical tape on the cameras (front and back) for smart phones and all devices. NSA, IT security clearance, and et al folks do these same things, because they know how easy it is to hijack a personal device's features to spy or stalk. I've spoken to various law enforcement (including in the IT world), and they all nod in agreement I should be doing these measures. Do these work, are they decent quality? Yeah, they are. They've been working really well and I'm going to buy more for myself and others I know that are interested.

My package came with strain relief boots. These are very small on the inside so you need to be good at soldering. I would suggest a fine tip soldering iron.
