This is the perfect solution for those who have no fly fishing supplies. With this set you will need for nothing else before you go fishing. I was very happy to see the reel already had all of the lines set up. For a novice it is a bit daunting when you have to tie the backing to the fly line and to the leader. Very happy to see this was all done for me. All you really need to do is tie your fly. The case is awesome, it fits everything you need for the rod and you can keep the reel attached and it offers solid protection. I wasn't sure what the quality would be like judging by the photos, but in person you can see the quality and detail so much better. I chose to go with the 5wt as I doubt I would make use of the 8wt. I think the 5wt is a better all around rod for the lakes and streams near me. The rod is very durable and light. Most importantly the rod is very well balanced, I'd say perfectly balanced since it feels like you are holding nothing in your hand. For those who are particular about their drag, there is a turn dial drag adjuster on the reel, it has a smooth action and makes adjusting drag very easy. You do get a free reel key chain which you can reel and feels very well made. I have been using it since I got it, it is nice they added this. So far I am loving the Maxcatch brand.

Fantastic value for the money, i have been beating on my maxcatch 8 weight for 3 years fishing for salmon, steelhead, lake trout, and trees and it's held up to the abuse. I bent the reel a bit on a salmon in heavy current but was able to bend it back and its good to go. Perfect beginner or "beater" fly rod setup. The hat is nice too!

UPDATE: Manufacturer saw my review and volunteered to send a new rod section. New section arrived about 6 weeks after purchase. Now I have a complete rod with functioning guides. I'm upping the rating to 4 stars as this is a good starter combo and certainly worth the money spent. The rod is a nice configuration, 4 piece travel rod is ideal for taking on a plane. The reel is adequate and comes pre-spooked with floating line and a tapered leader. The problem for me is the first guide. The ceramic ring (or whatever material it is) is gone and the guide has a sharp inner surface so if I use it as is, the fly line will be ruined in no time. I’m not sure I have time to return it before my fishing trip… so I may be stuck. I’d give this rod high marks if not fir thy e defective guide. Nice weight, casts well. But… broken guide.

I can’t compare it to much but I have a martin fly rod combo for 30$. I thought that was a decent setup. I pulled the trigger on this combo 8wt because I want to up my game. Oh man what a huge difference.. The handle is a soft touch cork. The rod feels really light. The rod case is nice and solid for protecting it. It came with some flies that seem decent to start with and a fly case. The reel is awesome compared to the martin combo I have, adjustable drag/doesn’t click while reeling, much bigger size, and the quality look/feel is great. The casting is super easy for me. Barely had to try and it wanted to throw the line like it wasn’t even there.. I received it today and immediately took it to the lake around the corner and I messed around with it. Caught a bunch of bluegill on it, 8wt is pretty over kill for panfish but I wasn’t catching any bass at that area so I switched to small flies. I will update this post if any issues arise from more usage! I highly recommend this combo! As an upgrade from some thing like the martin combos that are cheap.. or even skip the cheaper combos all together and go for one of these!

9ft/5wt. GREAT Beginner outfit. It has everything you need. Gets you started on the water, so you can enjoy and decide whether you want to really invest in the hobby longterm. I haven't used the flies (i use much smaller flies). I would buy this again and recommend to new hobbyists. Easy to cast and set up. Very portable and light weight.

***Update, I have received a replacement for the peace that was broken. So now I am satisfied with the order. The reel works pretty good. I caught a 4lb Hybrid bass in fast past water and it performed real well. The drag was working Good, and allowed me to check off one thing on my bucket list. *** About I just bought this rod combo and only used it once maybe twice. I have kept it in its case and only take it out when I want to use it. Well the third time I went out, I was bringing my line through the guides, not putting any pressure on the rod, and it snapped. Very disappointed with this.

Really solid. Is it super light and responsive like more expensive gear I've used from Scott, Sage, Loomis, Fenwick and Orvis? Nope. Is it comparable to entry level rods from Cabelas and Reddington that cost more than it does? I think so. Here's the niche I think this outfit occupies: if you're new to fly fishing this is a great place to start. You might never need more than this outfit besides replacing worn leaders and adding tippet. The included flies aren't great but you can probably catch some fish with them and not need anything other than what comes in the package on your first outing. I use my own flies--I've been tying things that work for me for decades. Alternatively if you are more experienced and have kids or friends that are interested in trying fly fishing but you don't want to loan them a fancy stick or have them drop and bend the rim on a good reel before they tie your leader into wind knots... This is an inexpensive way to protect your other gear. The single action reel is very functional. The fly line is surprisingly good. The knot attaching that fly line to the tapered leader is a mess on mine. Plan to learn how to tie a nail knot if you don't already know. The zipper case is excellent. I'm really happy with the purchase.

After a couple months of use I recommend this package at the price point I bought it for; $90. It is almost impossible to put a setup together for that price, and it comes with some flies and a case. I am fairly new to fly fishing and here are my thoughts: The rod has a rather fast action and will feel hard to load up without much line out or a decent sized fly. Should not be a problem as an 8wt is often throwing heavy flies, just be aware. I weighed the line and it is within 8wt specs, pretty standard floating, welded loops on both ends, and some backing. The reel is ok, don't expect smooth drag or reeling, but it is all metal and better than many package deals. It is a good beater reel or extra. I upgraded after about a month to the Pisifun Sword and am glad I did, the Maxcatch reel now is an extra with sinking line on it. The box is a good extra, and I found the flies were fine as well, not the most exciting patterns, but some I did use and liked. To me this is a good beginning, beater, or extra rod. If the price stays the same it is hard to beat. You would probably have to spend upwards of a hundred more to get a similar package from a name brand.

J'ai acheté cet ensemble pour mon petit-fils afin de lui enseigner la pêche à la mouche. Pour moins de la moitié du prix de ce que je trouvais dans les magasins spécialisés, cet ensemble m'a surpris par la qualité et les accessoires. La canne et le moulinet sont parfaitement balancés, et le moulinet, moulé en aluminium, est léger et compact, parfait pour un jeune. Contrairement à d'autres avis que j'avais lus, le frein du moulinet fonctionne très bien, très efficace. Et mon petit-fils a été ébahi par son présent d' anniversaire dont il rêvait depuis l'an dernier.

My rod broke on the first use witch sucks but other than that great rod just be carful about the tip. It would be great if maybe match catch could send me a new one

It's a very soft noodly rod. Alot of fun for small rivers an creeks. Reel feels like it's worth what ya pay for.but keep it lubed up an wash hooks.. great low price setup!

Surprised how well this thing casts, the reel is very smooth. Was looking for a cheap 3WT and this works perfectly. Nice kit with the case, flies and fly box. All you need to start catching fish, without breaking the bank.
