Much better on grays than 5G, pretty neutral dark brown color but have recently switched to Colorsilk see update
After using Naturtint 5G, Light Golden Chestnut color every 3-4 weeks with mixed results for a couple of years (Permanent Hair Color - 5G, Light Golden Chestnut, 5.45 oz ( Multi-Pack) see review: B001E0VWQQ , I recently tried the 5N Light Chestnut color. I am very pleased. The results are so much better on the grays. No more hot roots. No more lighter roots. No grays poking out here and there. All of them were fully covered except a few strands at my sideburns (those pesky burns, lol!) and by a few I really mean just a couple strands on each side.At first I thought the color was too dark and harsh (it is not warm or reddish at all) but my husband loved it immediately and said he preferred it to the other one. It is a very dark brown (not light at all). It has grown on me. I am of Italian and Portuguese decent so this is a very natural color on me. If you have light brown or dark blonde hair and want your hair to be light brown, this is probably not the color for you. This is nearly black. I did leave it on longer than suggested (an hour instead of 40 mins) so maybe that has something to do with it.In general I have found that Naturtint does not lighten very well (even within two shades) so you are best off choosing a color that will match your natural hair color. It is especially a problem on grays as they can end up light and brassy while the rest of your hair is closer to your natural color. I tried dark blonde 6N and had similar problems: the grays were not as brassy as with 5G but they were much lighter than the rest of my hair and it was not flattering on me. 5N is really a perfect match for my naturally deep chestnut hair.UPDATE: I have recently switched to Revlon Colorsilk brand hair dye. I tried Colorsilk on a whim and feel it is a superior product for several reasons: better smell and gentler than Naturtint, much lower price, more colors, more widely available and it leaves my hair in better condition than Naturtint did.Like Naturtint, Colorsilk also does not have ammonia. Colorsilk does contain Resourcinol, one of the chemicals Naturtint does not contain. Colorsilk also contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which I try to avoid but this is extremely common and hardly a deadly chemical. The skin deep database would lead you to believe that Resourcinol is a horrible life threatening chemical; however, if you look up Resourcinol you will find that is a well-known chemical and is even used as a drug taken internally (so how dangerous could a topical application in which very little if any chemical gets into the bloodstream be if it is being prescribed for internal use?). It is also used topically to treat conditions such as eczema. Yes, it is a poison in high doses but so is nutmeg and you don't completely avoid eating that in normal quantities. All permanent dyes contain PPD and so does Naturtint. That is the ingredient that causes allergies to hair dyes. Ammonia is added to some dyes especially for lightening. It is not the cause allergic reactions but it destroys hair and causes headaches. If you want to go completely natural, your only choice is to use henna and indigo. Tried that route and it is way too time consuming. If you don't want PPD, you need to use a semi or demi but those don't last long and don't cover grays as well. All in all, I find Colorsilk to be an inexpensive, good, gentle and readily available product. So far, I am happy.

Why did they change it????
They used to include CC cream which was my favorite part, as well as shampoo and conditioner for after the color that gave so much moisture to my hair. Now we just get a mask. I tried to find a place to comment on their website but could not. I LOVE this product but am not happy that they made this major change.

The availability of the product online is so reasuring.
The hair dye doesn't have the strong chemical smell of other same products. It is also long-lasting.
