Central banking is magic. With a few words, the Fed can lift the stock market out of desperation and catapult it towards euphoric highs. With a few keystrokes, the Fed can conjure up trillions of dollars and fund virtually unlimited Federal spending. And with a few poor decisions, the Fed can plunge the entire world into a recession. The Federal Reserve is one of the most powerful institutions in the world, and also one of the most difficult to understand. The Fed acts through its Open Markets Desk, which sits at the heart of the global financial system as the worldโs ultimate and limitless provider of dollars. On behalf of policy makers, the Desk gathers market intelligence from all the major market participants, sifts through reams of internal data, and works behind the scenes to keep the financial system intact. It is responsible for all of the Fed's market operations, from trillions in quantitative easing to hundreds of billions in repo and FX-swap loans. The financial crises of 2008 and 2020 abated only through the emergency interventions of the Desk. Joseph Wang spent five years studying the monetary system as a trader on the Desk. From that vantage point, Joseph saw firsthand how the Fed operates and how the financial system really works. This book is a distillation of his experience that aims to educate and demystify. After reading this book, you will understand how money is created, how the global dollar system is structured, and how it all fits into the broader financial system. The views in this book do not necessarily reflect those of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York or the Federal Reserve System. Review: Excellent primer! - Joseph Wang has done a great service by unpacking and explaining monetary policy arcana. The central bank used to be a rather staid affair that wavered between its dual mandate of price stability and full employment. But the advent of a fiat dollar and global fiat currency regime has radically changed central bank strategies and their real economy effects. Fed watching used to be about divining the Fed Funds Rate. No more. ZIRP, QE, YCC, REPO, Reverse REPO, etc. are all fully explained in layman's language. Joseph even closes with a section on Fed watching, but you can skip that and just tune into his Markets Weekly YT channel where he generously provides that for us for free. Thanks Joseph. Review: A sharp, concise, and intelligible guide to complex ideas - I've been following Joseph Wang for over three yearsโacross books, videos, articles, and everything else heโs published. For me, the second edition of CB101 was a no-brainerโa much-needed and well-executed follow-up to the first edition from six years ago. True mastery shows in the ability to explain complex topics simply and concisely, and in my experience, nobody in high finance does this better than Wang. Highly recommended for students, practitioners, and curious enthusiasts alike. This is all you need to understand not just banking, but also niche areas like money markets (repo and FX swaps).

Useful to some extent
The author of the book certainly simplified and explained some complex concepts between the Federal Reserve and various markets quite well. However, he seems to have unfairly stated (almost as a fact) that equity market participants are relative simpletons compared to the credit market participants (who seem to be able to sense โdangersโ well ahead of everyone else). I think it has happened before, in terms of credit markets reacting first, but it is also the underlying nature of the asset class that (sometimes) achieve this for the credit guys. Still a largely enjoyable read.

Fascinating read
Absolutely fascinating. Written in very easy to understand language and format although explaining fairly complex ideas. I am certain most people within the industry could not explain the banking system as concise as well as this book. I also personally loved how Joseph added details into daily practices and life within the Federal Reserve, providing an illustration that only those from the inside could.

The guide to modern monetary operations!
A highly accessible yet technically insightful guide to modern monetary operations. Joseph Wang successfully bridges theory and market practice in a way few books do.

Surprisingly information-rich given the conciseness
I read this intermittently over a few days and found myself learning a lot about not just the US Fed and its processes but the financial market on a whole. This book offers a succinct and clear outline of how the Fed guides interest rates by directly interacting with various markets - Treasuries, Corporate Bonds, Agency MBS, Commercial Loans. It also offers a clear overview on the major players in the financial market - primary dealers, commercial banks, hedge funds, and a few others. I also appreciated the short blurbs interspersed throughout the chapters which offered a clear walkthrough of real events. One thing I will note though is that this book is very much focused on the US Fed, which is to be expected considering the author's background working on the open market desk. If you're from any other country this would mean that it doesn't offer a 1:1 picture of the specific mechanics of your central bank but I do think it helps in knowing what the right questions are to ask. In sum, I'd say this is worth the short read, especially if you're like me and aren't familiar with financial markets. 5/5

The title is an apt description of what's in the book
This book was exactly what I was looking for - it is a solid, non-technical book explaining the workings of the Fed in particular and central banking in general. There is no particular political bias or anything like that. Everything is well explained. Every now and then I think it could have benefited from a little more editing, eg I think he uses the word "repo" several times before explaining what it means. But for the most part it's well laid out - the chapters have an explanation of how some particular thing works, and then a few anecdotes about specific instances of how it came into being or has evolved over time, almost always involving 2008 or 2020. If you're looking for a longer history of the Fed, this isn't it - this is more of a nowcast. I don't think he refers to anything that happens prior to 1999 at any point in the book. You do need to have some pretty general financial knowledge going in, like what a bond is, but it's pretty accessible.

What an amazing book
Super interesting and unbiased. Author makes such a complex topic feel much easier to understand. I also like that, despite focusing on central banks roles and mechanisms, author also explains a lot about the banking system as a whole. Overall very rich reading.

Always wanted a book like this!
If you have an interest in central banking or money, I highly recommend this book. Very easy to understand and comprehensive. Iโve watched countless YouTube videos to try and understand banking but this book is the best resource I have found to teach the fundamentals. Informative, enjoyable, and easy read!

Must-read for people interested in monetary policy
This book is a fantastic guide to the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. The clear writing and use of illustrative exemples allow non-economists to understand the concepts as well. I personally found it a great complement to the author's blog, Fed Guy, to follow the current developments in the field and in the broader markets as of June 2022. Hoping Joseph Wang will publish other books on the subject in the near future.

Leveling the playfield in terms of understanding the FED.
The real mistery is why wouldn't a jewel like this be in the core curriculum of a bachelor/masters program focused on markets and finance. A must for any professional in banking. This should be your core!
