Still Breaking Them In
*****UPDATE: Oct 30, 2014: The shoes are now completely broken in and while I still get minimal blisters on the back of my ankle I have plenty of space in the shoe and could even wear thick socks with them. The pressure on the top of the foot is no more and the shoes are super comfortable to walk around in. If you can get past the first initial wears to break them in the shoes fit perfect and really mold to your feet with time. They are my go to shoes!*****UPDATE August 25,2014: After loosening up the shoes with newspaper and bottles I then wore two pairs of my thickest socks and wore them around the house for an hour or so. After I did that and tried them on I had no issue with pressure on the top of my foot.***********If your think you might have gotten the wrong size then wear them around the house for a couple of days to test them out and see if they are not your size or if they just need to be broken in.***Okay...brace yourselves. I was eyeing these boots for nearly a year in my wish list and finally I took the plunge and bought them. I had researched and took my proper foot measurements to make sure that I am indeed a size 11 womens shoe. I was so excited to get them but had a difficult time getting them on for the first time...cue disappointment. I am stubborn/impatient so I kept them anyway and did research on the fit when broken in, the common areas that will be tight for this shoe, etc.I found that like myself, others had issues with the instep being particularly tight and while that is the only issue for my foot in this shoe I started to wonder if I had gotten the right size. However numerous blogs and reviews claim they are supposed to fit tight because this leather loosens and mold to your foot the more you wear them. (aka break these suckers in)Day 2 of the shoes showed no signs of the shoe fitting any better. I could wear my normal thin socks with them but doubling or wearing really thick socks hurt. I was really sad at the thought of having to return and buy them from the Dr. Martens site because this was such a good deal. But I literally just bought boots in an 11 that are really comfy so I gave it another go.I stuffed the bottoms with newspaper making sure to pack it really tightly for the instep because that was my biggest problem and to my surprise it worked! Day 2 the shoes weren't comfy but they weren't super tight either. Then that night instead of newspaper I took pill bottles from vitamins and stuck them in the instep area because someone had told me they used beer bottles to loosen that area. That so far had been the thing that really helped the shoes fit. My left foot was still a little tight but my right was about right. Which is when I knew that I had gotten the right size. They just need to be broken in. I was even debating taking them to a shoe repair shop to have them stretched a bit but then I got the pill bottle idea and that has worked for me.My normal shoe size is a womans 11 (standard width) but I've found I go up a size for payless' shoes because they hurt only to find myself swimming in a 12(standard width) once they are broken in. Which made me realize that I am an 11 (11 wides are even too big)My advice to you would be to measure your foot and use that as a guide. If your as stubborn as me and are determined to make them fit them just be patient. These shoes are made with a very tough unforgiving leather that will take time to break in. Of course you could just size up to avoid the whole issue but then they may be too big once they are broken in.

Size 8 is not size 8
I purchased these boots 3 times. My normal size is an 8. What I received fit more like a 9. I returned the 8 as defective for a 7. Size 7 was too small. I ordered another size 8 and it's still bigger than a normal size 8 but not as big as the first size 8. I'm only keeping them because I love the color. Will wear thick socks.

my experience with sizing
about my feet: i wear a US women's size 6.5 usually but am cursed with my right foot being half a size larger so sometimes I go for a size 7 to accommodate that foot. I have an average arch. My feet aren't particularly wide but I wear a lot of heels and am developing a little bit of a bunion so wide shoes would be more comfortable for that but the shoe would be overall looser.I ordered a US size 7 at first, for my hard to please right foot. When I tried them on, they were pretty comfortable except for a little pressure at the top of my foot where the tongue of the boot meets the toe of the shoe. But rather loose for both feet. I wore two pairs of socks because I read that that'll help with the prevention of a lot of pain while breaking them in. But my heel and ankle were lifting up in the boot a lot while i was walking. With three pairs of socks on, I think it would've been a perfect fit and maybe I wouldn't even need to break 'em in with all that padding, but I want to wear these in the summer too and three pairs of socks in the summer doesn't sound pleasant. So I returned them and reordered a size 6.Size 6 was TIGHT in the shoebox. There was no way I could have broke these in the normal walking around way. I'm sure I'd bleed and bruise from the top of my foot. The width of the shoe fit perfectly though and the length wasn't that bad. I know the leather would stretch a little so I was going to try and make these boots work. How I broke them in: I used the blow dry method. I wore three pairs of socks: one long thin pair, one long wool pair, and then one athletic ankle pair. I then blow dried spots that were rubbing me while i walked and the toe box (especially the part on top where the tongue is stitched to the front of the shoe (that's where it's the tightest). I did this for 30 seconds while flexing my toes and ankles. I'd do this 4-5 times taking some 30 second breaks in between so I'm not heating the leather the whole time. Afterwards, still wearing the shoe no matter how tight it was, I walked around in them for about 5 minutes to let them cool a bit and then rubbed some Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam Shoe Polish on it to condition the leather, especially getting it into the stitching at the top of the shoe. After taking off two pairs of socks and just wearing the wool ones, it felt WAY better. Since my right foot is bigger than my left though, I blasted the blow dryer on my right boot again but that was like the a few days later since I wanted to give it a break. I also keep balled up newspaper inside the toe to keep stretching the top part out.My recommendation: If you're a half size person. Round up if you have wide feet or high arches. Or don't mind wearing three pairs of socks. If you're a whole number size and have wide feet or high arches, stick with your normal size and try the blow dry method. If you have normal, average feet and don't want to go through too much pain with that tightness at the top of your foot, order your normal size. If you have normal, average feet and want to work hard at breaking them in, order a size down. I kind of suspect 9 times out of 10, the top of your foot will be going through some pain either way though unless you want to wear at least two pairs of socks with a larger size. The boot itself: the cherry red smooth is such an awesome color. I always wanted a combat boot this color. Sturdy construction. Comes with an extra pair of yellow laces. Despite the pain of breaking them in, even while in pain from back when they were tight, I jumped in them and it really feels like a bouncy jump. I was like, 'i can see why they call it airwalk now'

They hold up well and they are comfortable.
I have a high instep - I had to remove the thin footbed. The footbed underneath is fine and it conformed to my foot. The laceup feature of this boot is key. Holds my high instep and weak ankles in place while I work and play. The seams inside the boot have too much remnant fabric on them. They can fold over on themselves as you put the boot on causing a pressure point. I trimmed mine with a razorblade. Not everyone is going to want to do this. Both pairs were like this. Duct tape works too - holds the flap of fabric in place.

Great product.
I don't usually write reviews, but I feel like I have to after ordering these boots! They arrived fast and efficiently, and the packaging was secure and sealed when it arrived. The boots fit perfectly, although they are a little tight (which is to be expected when new) and just need to be broken in. All in all, a good purchase and a happy customer!

Fabulous throwback to my youth!
I ordered the purple in a size 7 for my teenage daughter. Delivery took just 2days, boots were well packaged and arrived in perfect condition. The purple is a lovely deep colour - beautiful! My daughter takes a 7 in shoes normally, and has slimmer feet than me.. The boots fit her absolutely perfectly :)I also tried them on as I'm normally a 7 - 8 in shoes depending on style, and my feet are a bit wider than my daughters, but average size for an adult... I have to say that I found them slightly on the small side for me, as my toes were right at the end, and probably would have found the 8 more comfortable. A fabulous boot though, my daughter is over the moon! Highly recommended!

Fantastic experience overall. Will recommend to friends and family.
It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two founders decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.
