Gift for my husband. The leather “board” makes it so unique. It is fun and easy to carry along anywhere. The wooden chess pieces should be designed without the felt underneath - it damages immediately when a player slides the pieces over the leather board during a game instead of picking it up properly - the bottoms of our wooden pieces are already randomly coming off making it appear and feel cheap.

The Board:- Board Materials are as expected and very nice to the touch. Exactly what would be wanted from leather.- The board, being leather, has some of the natural drawbacks that accompany leather. In this particular case it is with regard to flatness. The stitching is of good quality, but the composite design makes laying flat, a challenge. With some exposure to air and humidity this may become more compliant. Otherwise, upgrading the pieces to those of heavier weight would probably be most practical in negating the subtle waves that can happen with the board.- If flatness is an issue, I have found that lightly wetting the back of the board and blow-drying it has allowed the leather to shrink slightly which has taken up some of the slack in the leather, allowing the board to lay perfectly flat. I only moistened the portion of the board where I could see there was slack, and I don't recommend this method to everyone because I have experience working with leather.The Pieces:- Pieces are perhaps a touch too big for the squares on the board but this isn't a major drawback (almost a matter of preference).- Piece sizing relative to each other is also decent except perhaps for the Knights which feel overly large compared to the Bishops. A minor compromise when considering the overall product.- Piece weight is a noticeable weak point especially when considering the leather board. As noted above, upgrading of the pieces is recommended, but be mindful of piece size (3") since anything bigger maybe come a storage issue.- Each colour does NOT come with an additional Queen, which is another short coming.

Very rarely does an item arrive looking exactly like the pictures, but even more rare does an item exceed expectations. As you may tell from my pictures, the item I received is not the same color as pictured on Amazon, but I like it so much more. The quality of the stitching and the material used are of high quality. When purchasing this item, I was excited for the concept of a leather portable chess board and settled for the color that was available. What I received was exactly the item I was looking for in my head.My wife and I opened the box and played three games right away. We look forward to play chess on this set for years to come.
