The timer is rated to handle 40 amps at 240 volts and typical water heaters draw slightly less than 20 amps at that voltage. Some water heaters, however, can draw substantially more. Check the circuit breaker for your water heater to find out how much the circuit can deliver. If it is more than 40 amps, do NOT use this timer but if it is less than 40 amps, it should be fine. **Q: Will a rain sensor work with this timer?** A: The timer can't work with a rain sensor. **Q: Can this timer be used on a gas water heater?** A: Not for any gas water heater I'm familiar with. Unless your water heater plugs into the wall, how would aa timer control the water heater? Even for an electric water heater, the timer is only rated for 40 amps. (Yes, technically there is a way but unless you are a master electrician, it would be very unsafe). **Q: Will this replace Intermatic R8806p101c sprinkler timer?** A: Yes, it will. It can be wired for either a single leg of 120 Volts or to a Poly Phase up to 277 Volts. 50-60 Hertz. It's also good for up to 40 Amps whereas the mechanical timer is good only to 30 Amps. Simple wiring instructions are included with it for your application. I installed mine of a water heater. in my shop. Tip: take a photo of your wiring before removal and verify breaker is off—this is not a “plug-in” device. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So far so good *by P***K on January 26, 2024* I purchased 2 units. One for a 240v water heater, one for a 120v hot water recirculation pump. Both for my home hot water system. Before ordering, I read a lot of the 1 star reviews. A lot of the reviews stated the install instructions and programming instructions were difficult to understand; display can not be read if not looking straight at it; the display screen dies after 8 months or so. Install It does need to be mounted in such a way that you are able to look at the display straight on. Either at standing height or kneeling height for ease of install and programming. If you have a basic understanding of electrical diagrams, these can be installed with ease. I do recommend making your own jumper wires of the same wire gauge you are using for install. This will allow equal clamping pressure when you tighten the clamp screws. Programming It did take me two tries to get it right only because I skipped a step. If you follow the instructions step by step, programming is a breeze. Display failing I guess I'll find out in 8 months if the display is going to fail.
