Refreshing look at herbs. Something for beginner and more experienced gardener.
I was in two minds whether to order this. I already own a fairly respectable selection of books on gardening in general as well as herbs. I stopped randomly buying herb books a few years ago because i found them repetitive, not very comprehensive and nothing i couldn't just look up in more detail than was offered on the net, so that's the position i approached this book from. It had a real uphill climb to overcome to say the least. It's not a huge book at 143 pages but i find it's pretty comprehensive and has so much more to offer than the herb books of 10 years ago. Lavender, rosemary, mint. The end.No. This book goes into herbs like sweet woodruff, monkspepper and violet among others. In addition there are sections on propagation (most important at this point in time), harvesting, preserving etc. For a smaller book it's pretty comprehensive with lovely colour photos without the photos taking up valuable space at the expense of information. It's the best of both worlds. It's offered this slightly jaded herb gardener a refreshing look at herbs but would also offer the beginner a really useful starting point to begin selecting and buying herbs and maybe propagating them too. This book is sufficient that it would keep a beginner going for quite some time. All in all it has something to offer everyone. Maybe a perfect gift? I've thoroughly enjoyed it i must say. I'm very happy to add it to my shelf of gardening books.

Such a user-friendly guide
Though a regular gardener, I have yet to take the plunge and venture into growing herbs. Yet, with so many uses, it's one area of gardening that I am keen to get into. So, this book is the perfect guide for a beginner like myself, but more so because it is very accessible.Sectioned well, the advice is helpful and practical and the images added serve to emphasise the professional guidance given. This is a valuable addition for anyone wanting to venture into the world of herbs, and for those already working with them looking to find furter inspiration.Well-priced, this is a valuable text to add to your gardening book collection.

Good overview
I really like this book, it has a lot of information for beginners (which I am!). It’s visually pleasing, which makes it a bit easier to read too. It offers lots of information regarding herbs, how to grow when to grow etc - and talks about the different types such as ones that grow year after year and ones you will have to replant every year.If you’re looking to grow herbs, I think this is a great place to start. It is a bit overwhelming though with how much info it holds - this is why I’ve marked it as 4*

Fantastic book with lots of information about herbs
Herbs is a book in the DK Grow series. It is a lovely little paperback with lots of information on herbs in an attractive book. Its chapters cover; why grow herbs, herbs for every garden, using herbs, and lots of information about the individual different types of herbs. It contains some great photos, lots of information, great tips and is a great book to use for reference. Will be very useful

Good, clear text, lots of pictures
This seems very thorough and satisfactory, the one thing I would change is its silly habit of alphabetising by Latin name, (so that "catmint" appears under N for nepenthe). I shouldn't think many folk know the Latin names of herbs!

Comprehensive guide, could be better arranged
This is a comprehensive guide to growing herbs, with much general helpful information followed by an A-Z guide listing herbs including ones you might never have thought of growing or maybe never even heard of, and having potential uses that you may not have thought of either. The only issue I have with this book is that the A-Z is ordered by the Latin botanical name of the herb rather than the common name, which seems like a very daft decision given that most people won't know these - so you will either have to memorise them as you go along, or else have to look up the index first every time you want to reference a particular herb.
