ATC or Grigri? Kind of need both depending on your climb
I am so used to the ATC type belay devices such as this Reverso, because that is all we had until the Grigri was introduced. I love the Grigri, and in some cases, I do carry two. But having the ATC is great for two rope climbing, and it is also great as a backup (always remember, two is one, one is none.)This is a very smooth ATC type belay device, and it should last a long time (I don't two rope often, and it is attached to my harness as a backup, just in case.) It is also great for multi-pitch climbs. It is also nice with the extra clip in area for auto-block. The Reverso is very light and compared to a Grigri, it is dirt cheap in price. The Reverso is also great for sub 9.5mm rope.Unfortunately, most indoor climbing gyms these days require that you use a Grigri or similar belay device for safety reasons, which I completely understand. Grigris are definitely safer so if I am belaying someone and I pass out or some crazy thing happens where I can no longer pay attention to the climber, it will auto lock the climber in place. Lowering someone in a Grigri is much easier (if used properly). There is emphasis on attention to the climber using an ATC, but if you're used to it like me, this should not be an issue. You can lock off an ATC in a variety of ways (like a mule hitch) but it is significantly easier with a Grigri. If you are a beginner climber, get a Grigri because most indoor gyms prefer it and once you learn how to properly use it (this is very important because incompetence or misuse will cause injury or death regardless of the belay device), the Grigri is a great belaying device. If you are an experienced climber who have used ATCs in the past (and know all of the ins and outs of using an ATC type belay device), get a Grigri and use the Reverso ATC for a backup or for special purpose (like two rope or multi-pitch).I love the Reverso, and would replace it with the same after normal wear.Hope this helps.
