You would be MUCH better off using a modern synthetic line for arborist uses. Lighter, stronger, more abrasion-resistant, non-molding... I can't think of any reason to buy natural cordage. I don't know how much length you need, but I'd look strongly at dyneema/amsteel/uhmw polyethylene (different names for the same stuff) lines. 1" manila has a breaking strength of about 8000lbs. In contrast, 1/2" dyneema breaks at 32,000 lbs. It's very slippery and highly abrasion resistant, which would make it slide over branches easily. The only possible concern is that its slipperiness makes it not take normal knots as well... but proper knot choice solves that problem. Pick up the Ronstan Fid kit and learn to make a few splices and some soft shackles and you'll be in good shape. Stay safe up there!

Q: Can this type of rope be used for a scratch tree for cats?

I found out by accident - IT CAN! I purchased for a nautical craft project - my three cats love it - used a leftover piece to make a scratch place for them. Good rope for a good price!
