The female part is 6.3mm (1/4"), the male is right angle 3.5mm (1/8"). Hope this helps!

Q: will this work with Audio-Technica ATH-M40FS Professional Studio Monitor Precision Headphones? I want to connect these to my laptop.

Yes it will. Those are the exact headphones I have, which I am using this with...along with a Tascam port-a-studio. You're good to go!

Q: Does this product work with input devices? (Will my microphone or guitar work with the adapter in the microphone input?)

This device is a tip-ring-sleeve connector at each end... the male to my phone, the female accepts my older 1/4" T-R-S earphone plug; good stereo into my earphones. That said, If that configuration makes sense for you, why not? Note that there is only one ring component of the cellphone-end plug. I just looked at the earplug/mike that came w/ my S5, and it has two ring connections, so you may not be able to input with this adapter. Probably should Google "I-O connector on smartphone" or the like.

Q: Im learning how to record, will this work with a basic guitar cable?

I would not recommend it, only because this is a stereo cable and a guitar cable is a mono cable. You'll likely have stereo to mono related problems.
