why does the five pack cost more than five times the single pack price?

Intelligent shopping! Compare prices. I found that ordering 3 - dual packs was more cost effective than ordering 1 - 5 pack! But, like anything, shop and compare, the savings I got may, and probably will, change!

Do i need to make hole in bag before i hang up or just hang the way it is

Just hang it the way it is. Do not make a hole in the bag. The bag contents is fine powder like substance.

Can these bags be used in conjunction with "auto spray" air fresheners or will it just absorb the smell of the air freshener as well as the odors?

The bags will absorb ALL smells, including that of an air freshener, making the bags less effective in reducing the original bad odor. These bags should not be used with any ionizing air purifiers or any air "fresheners" that add fragrances to the air.

If you had a dead rat in wall, can you place a bag into wall and then put drywall up and leave the bag in place forever (i.e. behind the drywall)?

You don't need to rip the walls open to remove the dead rat - just place the bags next to where the smell is coming from and the bags will absorb the odor until the carcass decomposes and stops emitting it. We recommend at least two bags for getting rid of a dead creature smell; more bags if the room is larger or the smell is too strong. More bags help absorb the odors faster.
