Worthless
before i purchased it i asked if it would work with an ipad mini. i was told yes. the unit doesnt hold together . the magnets are insufficient and it waves and pulls apart. it is not as offered. i contacted them on multiple occasions and they ignored my requests prior to writing this. it didnt hold together even before i added the weight of the mini. i like the led lights but it needs to be taped together to use it .

Minor but fixable inconveniences w/ quality but nice product
Works 'functionally' as described. Only gave it 4 stars because of the quality issue with the battery module. The on/off switch is opposite. To turn it on, click to off and visa versa. I also had to tuck in the power cord and glue it to the battery container because of the exposed wires inside the outside insulation. The cord is shorter than described in the picture so rather than setting the battery pack on the surface, I have to set it on top of the StandScan next to the phone. Overall these are minor inconveniences. My advice is to secure the end of the power cord to the battery pack for longevity if need be and if you are using a scanner app on your devices, I used a wide blue painter's tape to cover the white background of the scanning area so that the scanner app can auto-bordered. A larger sheet of dark paper as background will also work. Another thing to mention like other reviewers have, is that it does not have a light diffusor as the included instruction stated. My time was wasted re-checking the contents in the package, digging around the company website, etc. to sort out the confusion. The pro is that the battery pack uses a 9 volt battery, it's portable and affordable.

to balance the 1 star review complaining about the comparison to scanbox
i agree this looks like scanbox minus nifty colored stickers for the top (looks like an early Scanbox Plus Portable Document Scanner kickstarter backer got their goods & is reselling here on amazon now!) but i don't think a 1-star rating is fair just because of that & i wouldn't want people to assume the /concept/ is worth 1-star. this is the best design i've seen so far (especially as it's the only one, other than Scanbox Plus Portable Document Scanner, that has it's own light source)----- compared to: -----ScanJig - Turn Your iPhone, iPad or Android Device Into a Fast Portable Document Scanner - Turbo Charge Your Scanner Apps - Get Quality Images, Enhance Optical Character Recognition & Cloud Applications, far bulkier/less portable & while the upright scanning position may make sense for someone at a stationary desk (or using a tablet as it's the only one, other than the failed kickstarter project scanbooth, i've seen that positively can accommodate one), but i need to take mine to the library so i can copy textbooks ;-)Scandy - Scan with Your Smartphone, met their kickstarter goal nearly a year ago but still doesn't seem available (their website only lists this Amazon retailer for the USA), plus while elevates to the right height & provides a stable platform it does nothing to prevent shadows or provide illumination& pricier modahaus steady scan (not available on amazon)honestly, i'd *love* to order a scanbox (& especially their new project LIFX!) however, they sold out for their 1st run (which finally shipped in october, but way behind schedule) & new orders are not being taken nor is any there any indication when they will be. the standscan's available /now/ & when i called the number on their website (which has a more informative video they'll hopefully upload) someone answered & spoke with me :-D i'll update this once i actually get it, because i need something to help me this semester & can't afford to wait for scanbox --> update: looks like an early Scanbox Plus Portable Document Scanner kickstarter backer is currently reselling 1st runs here on amazon; however, there's still no way to order from scanbox itself & no updates when the next run will be...----- re: availability -----the standscan was listed as "unavailable" on amazon when i first saw it so i googled them, found their website & called the number listed on it. i got an actual human (seems like a small operation), asked them when more would be available on amazon (could've ordered through their site, but preferred to use amazon to ensure my financial information's protected) & they made more available via amazon within the hour ~ so if it says unavailable, i'd suggest giving them a call ;-)----- update: -----the order shipped the same day i placed it & came much quicker than expected. the *design* is just as expected though (which, one last time, seems to be just like Scanbox Plus Portable Document Scanner minus the nifty colored stickers on top). the quality felt a little less than elegant (there are literally clear tape-like stickers sealing some of the "seams" where the cardboard is folded over magnets), i haven't had a chance to test out the light strip & i'm concerned about the construction of it (i will take/upload photos after the new year, too slammed with school to do much right now & then will be relaxing/enjoying the holidays :-P)

Not stable
The concept and assembly of the scanner is great, however, very disappointed in that its not stable. It uses magnets to close up the scanner, only flap bound together. I think they really need stronger magnets. Also, contacted the company on Monday the day It was delivered and yet to receive a responds.

9v battery does not fit properly
Works pretty good with my iPhone when the flash is enabled within my OCR apps or the light is on in my room. I have not been able to use the Standscan light. There was no 9V battery included as stated in description. I tried putting a battery in but it fit real lose in the case and it seems the connectors were either under-sized or offset enough so that it was not possible to connect the battery.I have contacted their customer support about the problem and have yet to hear from them.

not worth it.
Light never worked, asked for help. I was told ask for replacement trough Amazon.com // Beside everything, it is just not worth money. It feels cheaply made. Small camera hole.

Easy to setup and teardown
Easy to setup and teardown. Compact shape easy for packing once it is collapsed. It is cardboard, but feels pretty sturdy. It won't tear or crease easily. Shipped with a 9v battery holder and a 12v power adapter.LED lights are all on one side, though that has not been an issue for any scans I have done so far. The documentation did refer to a diffuser sheet that might help if scanning glossy material, but it did not ship with my unit.My only gripe is that the lights don't work off of a standard 5v USB connector - that would make it significantly easier to take advantage of the multitude of USB chargers that are everywhere. I'm guaranteed to lose my 12v power adapter for this thing as some point...

This is an awesome invention. It is a simple
This is an awesome invention. It is a simple, reliable stand that turns my smart phone into a "scanner". I've used it in the library special collections section to take photos of photos that could not, based on the rules of the library, be scanned or copied. Library staff, however, provided a StandScan for me to use with my smart phone. What a boon for researchers! Now I have my own StandScan.
