Question 1

If volume of water bottle on top is larger than that of crock, will water level rise to the level of washer and leak out?

Accepted Answer

Not so long as the integrity of the bottle remains intact.  You know how when you put your finger over a soda straw filled with liquid, the liquid will not spill from the soda straw?  Well the same principal applies here.  A vacuum is created within the bottle as water flows from the bottom.  Once that vacuum in the inside of the bottle is equal to the atmospheric pressure outside the bottle (14.7 psi at sea level), the water will remain in the bottle.  When you open the spigot and water flows, air, seen as bubbles, will enter into the bottle, this is air from the atmosphere, entering into the bottle in response to the displacement of water and the associated vacuum  being created.  I know this is all very scientific like, so if it make you feel better, you may be more comfortable accepting the belief that invisible water nymphs living within the crock regulate the water flow.  After all, over the course of human existence, more people have believed the later rather than the former.  In fact, less than two hundred years ago, you could be hanged for espousing what I have told you here.  Which, now that I think of it, explains pretty well why global warming remains controversial today.

Question 2

is it just a piece of plastic? how can it seal water? just don't know how it works and dare not to try.

you put the piece of plastic on top of ceramic crock and when you put the bottle of water upside down on top of it  it acts like a cushion and the water dose not leak. Especially if you have a glass bottle instead of plastic one..it just helps to seals the two parts. We love ours and use it all the time.

Question 3

I'm not quite clear why you need a protection ring? Does the original purchase of the 5 gal. crockpot come w/this piece?

Hi Maggie, they should all come with the ring because the glass or plastic jar is upside down sitting on the open neck of of the crockpot and it could either break the bottle or your crockpot if the bottle was set down to hard. It's a protective ring to stop any damage from happening. Paula

Why won't the water enter my ceramic jug

make sure you fill the ceramic jug up first, then fill up the plastic container that inserts in the ceramic jug and it should be fine. also make sure your ceramic ring is in place first make sure there’s no leaks of air
