Designed to help experienced programmers develop real-world, job-role-specific skills—this Training Guide focuses on creating applications with HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3. Build hands-on expertise through a series of lessons, exercises, and suggested practices—and help maximize your performance on the job. Provides in-depth, hands-on training you take at your own pace Focuses on job-role-specific expertise for using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3 to begin building modern web and Windows 8 apps Features pragmatic lessons, exercises, and practices Creates a foundation of skills which, along with on-the-job experience, can be measured by Microsoft Certification exams such as 70-480 Coverage includes: creating HTML5 documents; implementing styles with CSS3; JavaScript in depth; using Microsoft developer tools; AJAX; multimedia support; drawing with Canvas and SVG; drag and drop functionality; location-aware apps; web storage; offline apps; writing your first simple Windows 8 apps; and other key topics Review: Great Investment - Having been working on web development projects about two years, I'm certainly not a beginner to web development. I bought this book for two reasons: (1) to help me pass the 70-480 exam and (2) to tie up all the loose ends of web development. Being self-taught, there's a lot of ground you miss, but with this book it has put together all the loose ends for me, and has really made things "click". The pace of the book is good, there are quite a bit of details, but I've never thought to myself that I would rather stab myself with a number 2 pencil. By no means is this considered light reading, but if you want a solid foundation then this book is for you. Review: This book provides really good tutorials and progressively builds on topics - I've been a developer for 3 years, but very little exposure to client-side programming. I always had difficulty with CSS and JavaScript. I primarily used this book as my study material and studied for 2 months about 4 hours a day. I passed the 70-480 exam on my first attempt with a score of 812. NOTE: there are some topics on the exam that aren't covered in the book such as, Flex grid, mobile gestures. This book provides really good tutorials and progressively builds on topics. I strongly recommend this book for anyone looking to pass the 70-480 exam. 4 stars instead of 5, because I think the book needs updated to cover a couple missing topics that are on the exam.

I cleared the 70-480 exam this week and this book has been very helpful. The material covered was relevant to the exam and the practice exercises were very good. I learnt a lot about CSS3 and JavaScript objects especially. And all the HTML5 features were covered, though not in depth, but enough for the examination point of view. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone taking the exam, or even for one who wants to find out what the buzz about HTML5 is all about.

Great comprehensive intro
Good preparation for Microsoft 70-480 but more importantly, great intro to web development. Very comprehensive, starts small and builds up, adding to knowledge with each chapter. I'm a professional developer with years of experience and this book was still a valuable read. If you are just learning web development or preparing for Microsoft 70-480, this is a very useful book.

I really liked the test driven development approach
If you're an experienced .NET developer, but new to HTML5, JavaScript and CSS this book provides the perfect introduction to those topics. The author explains each topic with simple coding examples and then builds on the examples to explain more complicated material. There is a lot of code in this book - I loved that. I ran most of the examples in Visual Studio and didn't have any issues. I am very glad the author used the test driven development approach because this is a solid approach used to build and design solutions, by writing tests first.

Good
Very concise although kind of detail on every aspect of the material covered. I chose this because I want do a cram sort of exam preparation. This is similar to those days Red book titled 'MCSD Exam Cram' titled books.

Good book if you want to study web development - provided you are familiar with some web dev
Pros: If you are self motivated, this is the right book for you. The exercises are helpful and can help you prepare for Exam 70-480 (for which the actual book still has not arrived and keeps on getting postponed by its lazy author). I didnt know VS had such great IDE for JS support - and this book explains that well. Cons: 1) There were many times when I tried to pick it up for reading, and always ended up falling asleep. You have to realize that it is a training guide (the boring book) and if you are already familiar with some concepts, it might trigger your interest for learning the whole material. Also, the examples sometimes dont work in IE10.

Web developer must have
The book provides great details on html5. I am a .NET developer and just half way thru the book and learned a great deal of CSS3 and html5. Love this book. This is the Web developer must have.

Definitely the better alternative.
The only reason I am rating it 5 star is because I don't think the other guy doesn't understands how Kindle works or how produ t reviews work. But this book is definitely a better alternative to the actual 70-480. But you also hazard to find some study material on your own.

A "Must Read" Training Guide to HTML5
I wanted to make sure that I got towards the end of this book before making any kind of review. The book is amazing! It is a must read, and it certainly precludes all the other content I have read on HTML5/CSS3 and JavaScript. If I lost this book today, then I would buy it again in a heartbeat. This is one of the best training guides that I have ever read. My wife even commented on how much I seem to be enjoying this book. I am giving it a 5 star even though there are, exceedingly, minor: grammatical, programming-language syntax, and programming style errors. They aren't really substantial errors in anyway, and anybody with the most elementary understanding of programming would be able to quickly adjust the code to get a working result. However, the solution material, to the best of my knowledge, is spotless. I read a review that said there were not any results, but that is not the case. Mr. Johnson has gone the extra mile and had a complete solution set to all exercises posted online at the site listed on the back of the book. I think its in the index and/or introduction somewhere as well.

Great!
This is a great reference guide for the 480 exam. But be warned; not everything you will encounter in the exam is covered here. Most aspects of the exam are definitely touched on, but I found that there was a lot of emphasis on things that were unlikely (and indeed did not) to appear in the test and which were alluded to but not really delved in to which did come up. This is a well written book with lots of useful information and a worthwhile addition to training towards 480. When used in conjunction with a practice test it will serve well.
