Architecting EUC Solutions Paperback – April 12, 2016

This book is a great overview of EUC and helps you figure out all the questions you should be asking when designing an EUC environment. It breaks down the different components and goes into detail about how to design for each one. For someone such as myself who is still fairly new to the ins and outs of VDI/EUC (less than a year of experience), this book was a great resource to tie all the different components together. It provides detailed information and examples of each component and is explained in a way that is simple to understand. It did have some minor typos but other than, that the content and the layout was excellent.

I've worked in the VDI/SBC space since 2007 and have seen the good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between. While products have gradually matured over the last decade (brokers, app layering, profile management, etc.) giving architects and admins greater _potential_ for successful deployment, that same maturity results in a great deal of complexity, making it difficult to select and integrate the right components/techniques that will achieve success. Regardless of level of VDI experience, the methodology that Brian lays out is a must read for anyone responsible for planning, building and running next-generation EUC solutions.

EUC requires a lot of forethought as decisions early on can drastically affect the management of the environment down the road. Brian does an excellent job of breaking down a complex set of decisions into a simple and easy to use reference guide. This is a must have for anyone in charge of EUC.

This book is definitely worth reading whether you are an IT architect or an engineer designing (EUC) infrastucture.After having read Architecting EUC Solutions I would say this book is an EUC compendium ‘par excellence’. A book you need in your back pocket and on your desk when you work in EUC. I realize that calling this book a compendium is wrong. This book isn’t “a concise compilation of a body of knowledge“, or what else and Brian may not be by definition a body of knowledge, but he does share his vast knowledge with his readers. To be honest I am still baffled with how much he actually shares, and that is the sole reason why I call this book a compendium anyway. Any points mentioned in this book should come up during your hunt for a design or architecture.Where at first I was a bit annoyed that this book is not a strictly technical or theoretical book (as most of the books about design and architecture which I have bought are) after reading about 30 pages I made a 180 degrees mental turn. I realized that Brian wanted this book to be different. The focus in this book is not the creation of a technical design for an EUC, but how to design an EUC solution. The technical part is a supporting part for the business requirements, which in real life it should be. It should support and service the business it has been deployed for. The moment I realized that the goal of the book is solution driven (The title actually should have been an obvious giveaway from the cover onward), I really wanted to read this book from cover to back.If you are looking for a book which approaches a technical architecture from a business perspective, this book, albeit mostly from an EUC perspective, does exactly that.Kim

Architecting EUC Solutions is a great resource for Engineers looking at implementing an EUC solution. Whether it is a Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop, VMware Horizon, or Microsoft VDI solution, Brian Suhr does a great job taking the reader through the project stages (identifying use cases, requirement gathering, POC, Assessments, and implementation).Having been an EUC Architect / Engineer for the better part of the last 8 years, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
