Off Grid and Underground: A Simpler Way to Live

The author did a fair job of describing how he built an underground home by burying a couple of shipping containers. There are diagrams in it which are helpful if one is trying to do this also. There could have been more detail in places--dimensions or distances stated. He does discuss at the end what they would have done differently if he did it again. I believe this type of construction only works where the water table is several feet beneath the bottom of the containers. He did provide for drainage. This type of construction is becoming more relevant as the planet heats up. Building a dwelling underground makes heating and cooling almost unnecessary. Ventilation is a big issue though.

This is a book written to start thought process and fertilize the imagination. It is not a text book with all the answers and yes things might have been done more efficiently. But it is the author's experience, his story, his dream that he shares. My wife has been after me to design a container home but I would rather live underground perhaps this has possibilities. Perhaps, that's the best I can say about this book is that it presents possibilities.

Lots of great ideas. Renewed my inspiration to build underground again. I think I would build a small entry greenhouse in front as a double entry and collect the excess heat via info in 'Passive Annual Heat Storage' book.

WOW! Fantastic book, well written and easy to follow instructions on making an wonderful easy off grid house. Step by step procedures with what could be done better the second time around. Can't say enough good things about this book.

I bought this book because I'm interested in living the 'off-grid' life. It has a lot of interesting content. Sadly, though, the layout could have been better as I would have liked to have a different formatting and some step-by-step instructions. The good thing though is that it 'does what it says on the tin' - the authors don't seem to be selling this book for the money, and seem only intent on giving their knowledge to people interested in doing that same. For that I commend them.
