Master Lock ProSeries 4-Digit Combination Padlock, Brass Lock 1177D

Have been using this as my gym lock (overkill, I know - but as I got my laptop stolen, I'm done screwing around) - it fits with very little clearance left in the lock hole (about the width of a human hair), so its a perfect fit. You cannot move it around or yank on it very easily. It is incredibly heavy and rather intimidating looking. The brass armor shroud around it is incredibly sturdy and does a good job of making life difficult for anyone with a bolt cutter. The boron alloy shackle is also much higher quality than the standard locks you find on the shelves, with a very true metallic feel. The combination are definitely on the stiffer side - they will not easily glide like tiny padlocks. In 3 months, I have not experienced the "sticking" issue, but the tumblers definitely prefer to be turned one way, which is not really a big deal for me. It is important to note that the lock only opens one way, and the dials will get easier to move with use, but they are STIFF. Personally, I like it as it reinforces the whole tough look of the lock. The rubber bumper, which I presume is to keep the lock from scratching whatever it is rubbing against, is flimsy and I lost it on the third use. Again, not a big deal. No padlock is going to be a foolproof solution in the world of sledgehammers, shotguns, and bolt cutters - but this intimidating looking lock definitely fits the bill to help persuade a would-be thief to perhaps move onto an easier target - (or at least convince them that bringing giant bolt cutters to a gym is too risky).

This lock was extremely easy to program, and the build quality really stands out. I ended up buying two—one to secure my shed door and another for my water-barrel storage cabinet—and both fit perfectly through the existing latches. The shackle is thick and solid enough that it would be very difficult—if not nearly impossible—for someone to cut through with a bolt cutter. The overall feel is heavy, durable, and well-made, and the design looks great as well. It’s the kind of lock that would make most would-be thieves think twice and move on. I’m very impressed and feel confident using it.

As I bragged to my neighbor about this lock he asked to see it. He looked at it closely for 2-3 min and said nothing. He handed it to me and said the lock looks awesome but "it's not a very secure lock. I wouldn't use it to secure anything that I truly would hate to lose" I disagreed politely saying "Its incredible and very hard to cut apart, no keys -cannot pick it, and virtually indestructible by force, hammer, chisel, saw, etc" He asked if id be willing to wager on it. He stated that he could get it open in 15 min or less with no tools!! We bet $10 I changed the combo,locked it , gave it to him and mocked him as to what i was gonna do with his $10. In 2min 12seconds he handed me the lock - OPEN, fully unscathed,, etc.He then collected his $10 and Ibegged him to show me how he did it. He hijacked the combo with a very simple routine and said he actually had it open in less than 1 minute proving how useless this lock is. I returned it.

This lock feels heavy, sturdy, and solid - I do like it. The components fit together nicely, the mechanism operates smoothly, and the overall construction inspires confidence. Setting your own combination is straightforward, and the instructions are simple and easy to follow. One feature I particularly appreciate is the protective covering around the shackle area. It provides a bit of additional protection and makes it more difficult to access certain parts of the lock directly. While no padlock is invincible, these design choices add an extra layer of resistance against casual tampering. That said, there are a couple of minor issues. The rubber cover on the bottom tends to come loose and can be lost fairly easily. The black rubber band around the middle also feels somewhat unnecessary and could have been designed or attached more securely. As with virtually any consumer padlock, someone with the right tools, expertise, and enough determination can eventually defeat it. Master Lock products are often discussed by lock-picking enthusiasts, but the same is true for the vast majority of locks on the market. In practical terms, the purpose of a lock is usually to make unauthorized access more difficult and time-consuming, rather than to provide absolute protection. For everyday use, this lock does exactly what I expected. It's robust, easy to set up, and feels durable enough for long-term service. While a few of the rubber components could be improved, the lock itself is solid and well made. Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase and feel it offers good value for the money.

Great product

I'm using it on my boats storage shed door. I noticed my neighbors using regular combo locks that look half as strong as this one. I'm hoping if someone does try to cut it the robustness of the case and lock will steer them to the losers around me using cheap locks...lol. This thing is built like a tank and would take more effort to get to the shackle since it is covered by the thick body. Hopefully it sends the crooks to an easier target like my neighbors locks.

Master Lock quality, and you get to set your own combination. The cover over the number tumblers are helpful to keep out grit and dirt. Master Lock has clearly figured out how to build robust, quality locks and these ProSeries locks are no exception. Being able to set your own combination is a great feature so you can come up with numbers that your team can remember, plus you can change the combination when needed for security purposes.

This is a hefty lock that can provide enough deterrence to discourage theft for many uses. But, locks can always be defeated, and a padlock can only withstand just so much pounding before it fails. If I needed a secure lock for a remote location, I would go to a good locksmith and discuss the requirements before choosing a lock. For my use, my gym locker was broken into and my wallet stolen. I bought this for more secure storage. But, unfortunately, the hexagonal locking loop was too big, so I had to buy a medium security Master Lock from a local store for still-good security that would fit.
