Jack Reacher

Solid Action Film
Tom Cruise may not be 6 feet tall as the character is describe in the book; nonetheless, Cruise does an amazing job playing Jack Reacher. The film is a classic American hero action film with some detective work. There was some very short (2 seconds) nudity at the beginning of the film that seem unnecessary and just there to be there. However, the film is engaging throughout the movie and Reacher's character and a sense of pursuit of Justice is deliver at the end of the movie by describing Reacher as someone who doesn't let anything prevent from giving Justice to those in need.

The Pursuit of Justice
I wanted to see whether this was the Jack Reacher film I had already seen--it wasn't. So, I started playing the first few minutes after midnight. That was a big mistake. We couldn’t turn off the film until the end and ended up staying up much later than we had planned. Just before we turned it on, my wife announced that she couldn’t watch a movie, but she was thoroughly involved in it. One thing that makes it engaging is the action. It’s intense from start to finish. But there’s more to the film, namely, the character of the title figure. Reacher—superbly played by Tom Cruise—was an thoroughly upright army investigator who came to the US—he had grown up abroad—to experience the freedom he had devoted himself to defending. Quickly disillusioned by the corruption and by the widespread frustration and despair of ordinary Americans, he drops off the grid and disappears. Provoked by a mass murder committed by someone he had investigated in the Army, he introduces himself to the DA and the police investigator in charge of the case. Of course, things are not what they seem. As you might expect, it is up to Reacher to take on nearly single-handedly a battalion of crooks and thugs. At the film’s end, he is described as someone who has no concern for public opinion or even the law, but is motivated by the pursuit of justice. He is the classic American hero. That's what makes the film special. I was pleasantly surprised that there was no romance in the film. The opening scenes in the film contain some subtle clues. Connecting them to what comes later is part of the fun.

Chilling Tense Beginning Goes Hollywood Rote Soon...Reacher Character Could Be More Compelling.
The initial frames of the film pull the viewer in with no dialog. The intent is foreboding as the camera shows various targets which are being accessed through the rifle scope. It’s an eerie look into an unhinged killer who choses victims, seemingly, totally at random. Some of the realistic cache earned gets chipped away pretty soon with the sniper’s backstory and the silly link to Jack Reacher. Do cases like the backstory make sense? I thought anyone in the army less than a general who goes off the reservation is persona non grata - a precision machine, that military, this suspected shooter should be rotting or dead instead of walking around scouting targets…not to mention requesting a mysterious person for what? But, hey, this is building a mystique for Jack Reacher and it gets dumbed down more because his bizarre “off the grid enough lifestyle to be invisible”. I guess that is supposed to be cool? At this point I’ve got to calm down and realize this ain’t the historical actor of Valkyrie, nor is it meant to be. With that I begin to drink in the outlier that is Jack Reacher. Photographic memory, ability to see things in his mind not unlike Nikola Tesla, and a guy who can fight. While Jack Reacher has potential to be a compelling character the story is rote. The action is rote and inserted as such. The co-stars are quite good, but they’re predictable - with special mention to Werner Herzog who makes an impression as the villain behind it all and the surprise of Robert Duvall who is welcome even though he can’t quite sell being Reacher’s “wingman” in the crunch. This film is saved by the fairly economical story-telling once it gets going. Yet, in the end a character like Reacher that could be compelling is just another Hollywood cut-out action figure. I didn’t even watch the last five or so minutes after the final confrontation which is telling.

Asked for God's Help
After watching this movie 40 times in the past 50 days, I glanced up at the review score and noticed that half a star was missing from the set. I immediately jumped out of my chair, got on my knees, and asked for God's help, as I knew this level of rage was not extinguishable on its own. This might be my favorite Tom Cruise movie of all time. Huh? Because of the mellow drive. It's Tom Cruise yes, with all its glory and intensity, but mellowed out into a nice sweet package. The actors are all pro quality and the story is clean with a nice level of complexity. The order of rank as far as Tom Cruise's movies as I'm sure we can all agree are as follows: 1. perhaps this one, 2. minority report, 3. MI1, 4. MI3, 5. Collateral. I don't think I'm saying out of line here.To those fellows who also rated this five stars, I solute you. You are obviously of an elite fiber and in a class far beyond the rest, and deserve more than your fair share of pleasure and success. To those who didn't, let me peacefully say with a sympathetic heart: maybe crank isn't your drug, albeit your drug of choice. I don't think I'm saying anything out of line here.

Great Entertainment.🐯🐯🐯🐯🐯
Excellent action thriller. Brilliant storylines, good acting and great all round entertainment. If you've read the fantastic Lee Child "Jack Reacher" books you may have been put off seeing the film because Tom Cruise is so NOT the Reacher in the books. Don't let that stop you - the film is well worth seeing too.

Entertaining thriller, non-stop action.
I never really rated Tom Cruise as a 'good actor' or one of Hollywoods heavyweights as he always appeared to have his roles tailor made for him.. When I saw him in a series of four films he made, not sequentially but here and there I thought he was quite adaptable and found his movies entertaining and watchable.Jack Reacher, ex-Military, starts to involve himself and make inquiries when a suspect held for multiple murders, drops his name. The suspect remembers little about the crime and the plot thickens and starts to take off once Reacher begins to 'poke his nose' where it doesn't belong - according to the criminals that is.Reacher is a one man fighting machine. The action is pretty-much non stop, and has some good fight scenes and chases. Apart from Cruise there is Dvid Oyelowo, Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike and Werner Herzog. The Tom Cruise films I personally like are The Firm, Valkyrie, Collateral and A Few Good Men.

A great film, even with a short actor
So I never read the books, so the height issue really didn't matter to me. This is just a great film. Jack Reacher is a maverick ex military policeman, asked to help out a guy he knows has killed in the past. Everyone but Reacher thinks he did it, and guess what, Reacher saves him. Cue lots of fighting and intrigue along the way. Very scary and sinister Russian bad guy by Werner Herzog, and great support from Rosamund Pike.Books you might like to read Cold Steel on the Rocks We Are Cold Steel Kalter Stahl auf den Felsen Wir Sind Kalter StahlCold Steel on the RocksWe Are Cold SteelKalter Stahl auf den FelsenWir Sind Kalter Stahl

Nothing new, but nothing bad
I'm a casual fan of Tom Cruise, so I just watched this regardless. I didn't know much about the book, so I can't comment on how accurate it is to its source material. I thought it would be more action-packed - like a kind of vigilante going round seeking revenge on your general baddies. As it turned out, it's more like a cop movie (but without a cop as the lead character). What action there is is all right, plus the acting is fair and it is not hard to see that money has been put into this movie.Tom Cruise is an ex military policeman who's investigating a seemingly motiveless sniper who killed five apparently innocent civilians. No sooner is he on the case does he meet the unfeasible attractive attorney, played by Rosamund Pike. I found this aspect of the film the most far-fetched - you know instantly that she's going to be the `will-they/won't they' love interest of the film. From then on, the film follows a typical template for this kind of movie. It's played absolutely straight (a bit like the `Bourne' films, but without the near-constant chase scenes all the way through) and it doesn't really add anything original to the genre of action/thriller movies. If you're looking for a bit of a conspiracy thriller with a plot that slowly unravels, this isn't a bad way to spend a couple of hours (plus it's nice to see Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall sharing the screen again since Days of Thunder). If you can believe that every single female in American that meets Tom Cruise wants to bed him, whether she's twice his age of half his age, then you should find this enjoyable.Probably more a 3.5/5, but I'll be generous and give it a 4/5.

It's a fun little movie that doesn't really stick to the plot ...
Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.. Or just Tom Cruise again. It's a fun little movie that doesn't really stick to the plot of any Jack Reacher book I remember. I don't really understand how one of the smallest looking actors was chosen to play someone who is depicted as a giant in the books. But that's not really why you see the films. The acting is fine the effects work well if not a little low budget looking at times. It's got Tom Cruise attached so you're likely knowing what you're setting yourself up for.
