My artist husband has wanted this book for awhile. Great vibrant pictures of his art. Arrived ahead of time in great condition. Perfect Valentine’s Day gift.

For most readers, the main reason for buying this well presented book will be for the copious colour and numerous small black and white, high quality, illustrations. In this respect the book does not disappoint.The text, however, by the journalist Eva Karcher, is another matter. It varies from some sections of quite straightforward biographical details of the painter Otto Dix, to often quite nonsensical appraisals and analyses of his paintings. This is an odd thing to do as the author quotes Dix himself as saying that his work should not be analysed, it should simply be looked at and enjoyed for what you see. It is also irritating that the text often refers to illustrations in an entirely different sections of the book, and occasionally to paintings that are not illustrated at all. Despite this disappointing narrative the book is still worth buying for the high quality, often full page, images which cover the full gamut of the artist’s work, even during the period of Nazi rule when Dix was effectively in ‘inner’ exile.The book includes a very useful five page chronology (1891 – 1969) of the life of Dix, which also contains numerous small black and white photographs of the painter and his family.

I have no idea how Taschen is able to produce a book of this quality at this price. Interesting and informative text with large full colour plates of almost all works mentioned in text. If you are interested in interwar art , Dix or just art in general this is a must buy.
