Was the perfect Christmas gift!
It took me a while to select this particular volume over several other books on Amazon about Japanese tea. Glad I took my time, as its recipient, who's into matcha tea, absolutely loves it. He's a bit picky about these things, so I would trust that, indeed, this is an excellent book on the subject. To anyone also interested in matcha tea: the reason I finally chose this book was that it has a good-sized section on matcha tea, which I could tell from checking out the table of contents via "Look Inside This Book." If you're looking for a Japanese tea book on a certain kind of tea, I recommend checking out the TOCs.

Makes us want to taste many teas, but is not a good teacher!
It is easy to become excited about tea because author Zach loves it so much, but it’s hard to learn about tea from this confusing book. The first tea region Zach talks about is Sayama, and the first thing he says is how it is different from Shizuoka—but he has not yet said anything about Shizuoka! And on page 87, he says more information about caffeine can be found in chapter 14—but this book has only 13 chapters!Maybe these problems are small because one can jump around and find the information that is out of sequence, but there are very big problems too. When Zach talks about matcha, he names many cultivars: Asahi, Uji Hikari, Samidori, Saemidori, Gokuo. But when he talks about sencha, he names no cultivars and and says it is “one tea” that is categorized by how long it is steamed. In truth, sencha-style tea has cultivars—maybe two of every three cultivars in Japan—but you would never know this from Zach’s book!

Weak Brew of Boring Info and Sloppy Writing
I recently read a tea book that left me feeling thoroughly disappointed. The book promised to be a comprehensive guide to tea, but it fell far short of my expectations. The writing was poorly organized and difficult to follow, with long-winded explanations that didn't really say much of anything. The information provided was sparse and superficial, and didn't really offer any insights or perspectives that couldn't be found with a quick Google search. The author seemed to be more interested in name-dropping various tea varieties and regions than in actually educating the reader about the intricacies of tea.Although the book had some nice images, they were poorly executed and didn't add much value to the overall reading experience. The book was also riddled with grammatical errors and typos, which only added to my frustration as a reader.Overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning about tea. There are far better resources available that provide more depth and insight into the world of tea.
