However, if your original vent was placed in siding on the outside of the floor joists, the 6 1/2 inch size can cover the hole. Our vent is placed over a rough size and then applied using 6 screws. **Q: Foundation vent opening average 14.5"x4.5" to 14"x4" with studs and foundation bolts blocking theopening. Are these exterior mounting for variances?** A: Yes, they are meant to be mounted on the exterior over the openings. In Nevada where they were invented, most contractors cut the openings on the outside walls outside the where the floor joists are above the actual cement foundation walls. If retrofitting, just put them outside of the vent openings and screw them into place.
