Q: Will it work on a cigar?

Sure, if you don't mind it crushing it at the points of contact. The spring action built into it is very strong. It is designed to firmly hold glass or rigid plastic test tubes, not cigars. I suppose it would hold a cigar, since they are usually tightly wrapped in tobacco leaves. My test tube clamp will firmly hold a regular Bic pen; so I guess it would work OK gripping onto a cigar.
