Hi, I have just tried, each cube can hold about 28-32 pencils. Hope this helps.

Can these be stacked horizontally?

Yes. The sides are smooth so they can stack any direction.

What are the inside cube dimensions?

2 1/8" x 2 3/4" each of the 4 cubes.

Is this dishwasher safe?

It is nice and heavy. I would hand wash it to prevent any discoloring/cliudiness.
