They are flattened. You have to assemble them. **Q: So do you get 6 boxes, holding 12 cupcakes in each box?** A: Yes. If you use the spacers you can fit 12 cupcakes. If you don’t use the spacers you can for about 18-22 cupcakes. **Q: The top will not touch the mountian frosting or the decoration atop the frosting?** A: I’ve used these for cupcakes topped with frosting and large sprinkles and they didn’t touch the top.
