It cleanses-- it is light, foamy, yet something astringent, and, well, refreshing about it. Must be the cuke and mint. Skin seems squeaky clean yet not dried out afterward. My derm recommends to me a non stripping, non harsh additive cleanser as I had a cosmetic skin procedure, and he says my face will be sensitive for a while, thus no harsh chemicals. I have graduated from Cetaphil cleanser to this as I get distance myself procedure. I am never disappointed in Burts Bees by the way.
